So my roommate said a guy was walking around door-to-door in the neighborhood selling Reese's packs "for his kids' school" ....without his children present. According to my roommate, whom I view as an abhorrent racist and cannot wait when he moves out, he looked like a genuine "thugnasty."

Well I guess when my roommate opened the door the first thing the guy did was instantly scan the living room behind him. Now as an apartment of five guys, all of whom are nerdy engineering college students, we have two huge big screen televisions. The dude obviously saw them.

The happens a week or so after we get the standard letter from the landlord saying we should be weary of our house getting broken into over break.

Soooooo, what does one do? I've been jumped before and won easily, but this isn't the type of thing one wants to gamble on. I do have one of these in the apartment:

But what are the best ways to not get your apartment broken into? Or have we more than likely been pegged and we should make two of us stay here over break on various days? I'd blow a dude's head off without much thought he was pulling the ol' "B and E," personally.

For what it's worth, we live in what I thought was a safer part of campus (Norwich), but my roommate has had his car broken into twice, and someone today tried to get into it but his alarm went off and they went scrambling.

Thoughts?

If your whole building is students that go home over break, you may want to have 2 guys take turns staying behind. If there will be people around, one of those portable alarm systems should sufficient.

You can get one of those buzzer type alarms that you attach to the door or a window pretty cheap at a place like Wal-Mart. They aren't actually alarm systems that send a message to some call center type place, but they do make a loud noise that should be sufficient enough to scare someone off when a door or window is opened.

You should also inform the campus police about the suspicious activity (I would have called them as soon as the guy left my place). That way you can give them a description of the guy and they can keep an eye out for him.

LOL at the pic of the gun and "I'd blow a dude's head off without much thought he was pulling the ol' "B and E," personally."--you really think you could?
Anyway, the inexpensive type of alarm may not be such a bad idea, but alerting campus police is a must...if anything, you've got it documented in the event something does occor

Stay behind for sure. That's really the only for sure way you'll be comfortable thinking about it. If you do the cheap alarm thing, you'll still be pretty worried I'd imagine.

Yeah, lots of tough talk from a guy who came to an internet forum to ask about apartment safety.

I really think you have to go "Home Alone" on this one. It's not a matter of if, but when he breaks in, you'll be ready. Set all these traps like having a paint can hit him in the face, or he steps on sharp Christmas ornaments or set a tarantula loose on him.

I have rented for years now. When we leave for extended period of time we like to portray someone is home. Leaving living area lights on, a radio or TV, also I will have a friend/relative stop by at least once a day. Even though my dog passed I still left the beware of the dog sign in my front window.

The best thing you can do is go to the nearest walmart store and purchase a 36" aluminum baseball bat and then go back to your apartment building and stand outside and wait for the first thugnasty looking guy you see and just start beating the shit out of him with the bat while screaming "I'M A LITTLE TEA POT" and I can gaurantee you that nobody will mess with your apartment.

I'm assuming you go to Ohio State because I had the same guy come to my door a couple weeks ago. I also noticed him scanning the living room in which we have an 2 Xboxs, 2 big TVs, and whatnot.

I interrogated him with questions like "Oh where does your son play?," "What position is he?" "Oh, I'm an avid high school football fan, what's his name, I'll keep my eye out for him."

Sure enough he stumbled over every question and I promptly told him to get the fuck out.

I'm the only one home at my place for the next week. If any one tries to get in I hope they don't mind bleeding out on my carpet.

haha thanks for the advice.

yeah vball I'm 100% I'd end a dude's life if he were robbing me. I was doing a number on the guy who jumped me in the middle of Secor before the cops showed up. It's not internet tough guy talk per se, because 1)it's not a threat to any of you (see "who on the OC needs their ass kicked" thread, and 2) this is a fairly legitimate situation, and 3) I'm not bragging.

We have several thousand dollars worth of stuff here, so we're a bit concerned to say the least.

its funny you say this, because it happened to me last year on norwich too. i started a thread about it, the best way to prevent things like this from happening are to lock your doors/windows at all times you arent home or in the main living area. i moved two blocks north to oakland and hope that shit doesnt happen again this year. cant afford it.

This is clearly the best, and most reasonable, solution. Just make sure there's an old guy with a big trash can of salt in your neighborhood (and you have to originally be afraid of him) that will actually help you when things don't work out how they are supposed to.

We're on the second story, so I think the windows are fine. But I can almost guarantee the people below us are in bigger trouble.

We're looking at a house on Oakland for next year, let me know how your break goes.. haha

For what it's worth my dad owns a duplex on 4th ST just past Oakland. It has been completely remodeled and has room for 4 comfortably even though I always had 5 in it when I was going to school there. Just had someone move out so it'll be ready for next year. PM me if you want to look at it. I loved living there because CABS has a stop out there and its far enough away from campus from all the shit but close enough to walk on a nice day.

Man that is just a bad situation to be put in.

Pretty much your only options are to take those big ass tv's out of the apartment over break as well as anything else electronic or someone is going to have to stay behind.

The other thing is this is a great example of why renter's insurance is very, very important. I almost want my shit stolen because I'm over insured on it lol.

Lol I have nothing valuable its not worth your time. Just the laptop I'm on, an LG computer monitor and a PS3 are the worthwhile things I can think of. Now if you venture into my roommate's room, he is a computer science major. He has the decked out gaming desktop and 3 computer monitors, etc. Funny part is I'm the only one with renter's insurance. I cannot get him to understand that if everything in our apartment was stolen, he isn't getting a dime out of it. Guy has got zero common sense.

I had to deal with this shit when I lived on Norwich as well. I just took my TV, game systems and computer home with me. This shit happens everywhere on that campus. Only place that we never had any problems was when we lived on 18th right behind Wendys, Mcdonalds, Buckeye Donuts etc
