is he really that good I have not watched a whole lot of baseball the last 2 years but I thought he was just kind of a slightly above average player

He's good, but not THAT good. That is a ridiculous contract, IMO. Especially for a team like the Nats.

Werth is a very good player....but he doesn't seem like a leader...or the star player

He seems like a 5 yr $60 million dollar player

Man the Nats really threw some serious $$ at him.

After looking at some of the posts from the Adrian Gonzalez thread, I was under the impression the Yankees and Red Sox were the only ones who could throw lots of money at free agents? hmmmm :)

Sports Illustrated had a good article on Werth this summer. Talked about how he didn't like all the attention he gets and would rather just play baseball. I'll try to find it.

Arent the Nationals considered a large market team? I pretty sure they are not small market regardless.

Washington was ranked #22 in payroll last season (behind the Royals and Reds)

Yeah, they may not be a small market team, but until recently they haven't spent too much money. That has changed with Strasburg, Harper, and now Werth.

Does this put Werth deal in perspective? #Nationals will pay him more than all free agents franchise has signed in last 20 years ($122.1M)!

Scott Boras is a God among men. He has been pulling the "mystery team" routine for over 20 years now and teams still fall for it when negotiating with him.

Werth has been playing in a band box surrounded by thumpers for a few years now, and I suspect that this will end up going down as one of the worst contracts in the history of major league baseball.

Buster Olney just said one GM said to him he has not been this stunned since someone gave Kevin Brown $105 million.

This kind of contract makes Shin-Soo Choo a $100 million dollar player if you compare his age and numbers to Werth. That is how outrageous it is.

He's never batted .300 or driven in 100 runs. They just paid $18 million a year to a guy who has at least a 50/50 shot of never making another all-star game.

It's not even the money so much as the years. He is going to be 32 in May, and just landed a 7 year deal. We have seen guys really fall off in their mid-late 30's now that PED's have been outlawed, and the Nationals just disregarded all of that to give a bloated contract bigger than the one Matt Holiday signed last year to a guy who is at best a role player on a good team.

Jason Bay signed for half of that last off season and he was a much better player heading into free agency than Werth is.

Teams thought that would be the template contract for Werth, but Boras managed to end up using the Holiday deal as he said he would ahead of time. Why teams are willing to be ripped off by him is just beyond me.

This is a horrible deal for the Nats.

If they were going to spend that much money, they should have divided it up among four or five guys and gone after some rotation and bullpen help

Unfortunately it's almost like the Nats wanted to make a big signing in the FA market. They knew they weren't going to get a Tier 1 FA so they gave the best Tier II FA a contract like the big ones.

Contracts like this will kill Cincy with Votto, Bruce, etc.

In 156 games Werth was responsible for 174 runs (runs + RBIs - HR). By comparison Jonny Gomes, in 98 games was responsible for 143. Plus, Gomes did it in 314 plate appearances vs. Werth's 652. Gomes is 30 and will make $1.75 mm. I'll take Jonny every time.
