He just said something I've never heard before...
Freshman don't care about winning or losing, they just want to play.
Sophomores only care about starting.
Juniors are the ones who care about winning.
Seniors only care about going on to the pros.

Well considering that even at the best programs, 20% of seniors will be drafted, methinks Dr. Lou has been imbibing on his own medication.
Lou is the Dick Vitale of college football...love his enthusiasm but damn does he say some weird stuff.

Only 20% will be drafted, but what percent think they will be drafted? At the big schools, I would imagine it is a very high percent.Manhattan Buckeye;587477 wrote:Well considering that even at the best programs, 20% of seniors will be drafted, methinks Dr. Lou has been imbibing on his own medication.

Lou Holtz uses so much hyperbole and I don't think many people are truly cognizant of that. Plus the context is almost never taken into account.

Lou Holtz is one of the most successful college football coaches of all time. To my knowledge we don't have anyone on here who played or coached at the D-1A level, so I'm going to take what he said with a grain of salt, however I think there's probably a lot of truth to what he said. Obviously they all care about winning, but winning isn't their only motivation/desire, so it seem to reason that his assessment is probably (even if slightly overstated) correct.

Literally, no. But I think he has a point on the basis of what he is saying.

Yeah, but the same guys are the ones busting their butts to get noticed. I don't know where Lou was going with that comment.

Just to be clear: I believe he said 2nd years are more interested in "starting".

They care more about getting noticed instead of helping the team win.

How is doing something to get noticed not helping? Are linemen trying to get noticed by committing holding penalties? Defense getting noticed by blowing assigments? Holtz' comment only makes sense if guys are trying not to get hurt. If what was reported is correct, Holtz just had a senior moment. Dumb, dumb, dumb comment.

Because a great player does his job every play, contrary to popular belief that a great player has the most tackles, interceptions, etc. Plenty of times players' assignments aren't going to be highlight material or something and players simply ignore it and do their own thing.

Which is why top teams have top coaches. You think Tressel would accept a defensive person leaving his assignment for the hopes that he'll "do something" in an instant that will get him picked in the 5th round? Holtz' comment was nonsensical. Holtz is capable of making stupid comments. He's made them often. This is another one of them.

This is dumb because those who care "about winning" are who they are regardless of class.

The opinions of a Hall of Fame coach who has won ~250 games with several programs > The opinions of naysayers who've never coached or spent much time with a football program.

Tressel is a great coach, but it doesn't mean that his players don't miss assignments. Like another poster said, someone may try to make a play instead of following his assignment. Anyone who has ever played or coached the game has seen players not follow their assignments and it hurt the team.

Wouldn't the juniors who are talented enough only be concerned about going onto the pros too?
