Couple weeks ago I was looking through my online banking and noticed a $19.99 charge to Microsoft x-box live. The last time I physically was on x-box live was probably back in April. I do have the automatic renewal so every month I was being charged $7.99 (then eventually $9.99 when they switched prices). I kept this going through the Summer because eventually I was going to hook my x-box back up to be able to play online, but I just never got around to it.
So this $19.99 charge was very surprising -- I hadn't bought anything, let alone even been online!
So I call Microsoft and after talking to a couple different people over the course of multiple calls the end result was that someone (a different gamertag I had never even heard of) was using my card and they bought 1600 microsoft points and then redeemed them for a game. They (xbox live) was able to confirm this wasn't me making the purchases, so they canceled that particular account and removed my card from it. They warned me to continue to keep an eye on it in case whoever this was had my card account numbers, they could just use it to purchase other shit. They said as far as getting the $20 back, I'd have to go through my bank (Huntington) to file a dispute and they'd contact x-box live and I'd (probably) get the money back.
So I call customer service at my bank, and this guy seems pretty confused by the whole thing. He has no idea how x-box live works or how someone could be using my card to make fraudulent charges. I asked him if I should just go ahead and cancel my card, and he literally tells me "No, we don't normally cancel the card based on just one fraudulent transaction; we generally wait for five or six." So I replied, "You're telling me you wait for the situation to get more complicated and in-depth before you do anything?" He ended up saying ultimately it was my decision, but his recommendation was to keep the card open and just monitor it closely.
I ended up talking to another guy later that night and he was a lot more helpful, and he said I absolutely had a case and they'd be mailing me the forms in the mail for me to fill out a dispute, sign it, and mail it back. So this all occurred back on November 17th.
Well a week later, November 24th, I still hadn't received those forms in the mail, so I went to my local branch to see if they carried them. The bank teller look at me like I was crazy, wondering why they (the branch) was only just now hearing of any of this. She had me see one of the "team leaders" who said that the dispute had actually already been researched and confirmed valid. She said she could only pull up a one-sentence summary of what it said, but basically it was deemed valid "based on my previous transactions with Microsoft." She said that's all she could find information for. She also told me I was literally the first person she ever met who was advised NOT to close their account -- the rest, she said, usually just get it closed and the bank is very encouraging of that. I was SUPPOSE to receive a letter in the mail explaining how the charge was deemed valid and contact information. I was really looking forward to this letter and talking to whoever researched it, because I wanna know what he knows. I know that someone I've never met, using my bank card, made a $20 charge on x-box live. If that isn't fraudulent, then what the hell is??
Anyways, the bank leader said if I didn't receive THIS letter by Friday (the 26th) then to give her a call and she'd investigate. Well I finally called her today (after still not receiving the letter or the dispute forms in the mail) and the number on her card went through to a salon down the street (seriously, I double-checked it two or three times).
Anyways, I've been checking my online banking a couple times a day and haven't seen any more fraudulent charges.
The most frustrating part is that in this day and age, I'm sitting around waiting for a fucking letter to come in the mail when e-mail and phone calls are an instantaneous way of contacting someone. I have no idea if these letters were lost in the mail or delivered to someone else or if they were even mailed out to begin with.
On my way home from school today I stopped by a Chase bank and opened a new account there and plan to slowly phase out my Huntington one. I'll stop by Huntington tomorrow and see this "team leader" again and tell her I never received any letters, but it doesn't matter because I'm cashing out my account and leaving them anyways because their customer service blows. Idk what will ever happen to that $19.99 charge. Sounds like I won't be getting it refunded -- speaking of, does anyone know of any further action you can take with this type of stuff? I suppose if I had the letter they sent out, I'd know of a way to contact them, but alas I do not.

I bank with Chase and over the past year or so I have had three fraudulent charges on my debit card. Each time I have had the issue resolved with one five minute phone call and have had the money returned to my account within two days.
Good luck.
Good luck.

How does a dog masturbate without having thumbs? I injured my thumb earlier this year and had to take time off from cranking one out.

Why the shit don't you just do the yearly subscription or buy the 12 month cards off of Amazon?
7.99 * 12= 95.88
or
$60 (current price it would have been $50 then) from Xbox Directly
or
$45 from Amazon.

$50 is what you are responsible for for digital debit card fraud I believe

Because I never signed up with X-Box live thinking I'd have it for more than a few months. I think I signed up back in January figuring I was only going to use it for a few months.
LJ - All the people I talked to both in person (at Huntington and Chase) and on the phone mentioned anything about that.

Ok, makes sense then althoug a 3 month card for $19.99 still would have saved a few bucks.
But yeah, I just hate seeing people pay the month by month charge who keep it for years. You literally save enough to buy an extra game at full price if you do it for a whole year.

Personally, I'd advise you to avoid $15 hookers... Remember Hugh Grant?

I think the wisest thing for you to do is switch banks. I bank with PNC, previously National City and I've disputed charges on my cards with both entities. Each time it was literally a 5 minute call and the money was back in my account within 2 business days. There were no forms to sign and the only time I received a mailing was to inform me when the case was resolved.

Same.
I left my card at a bar one night. Someone stole it, and then ran up some charges at Wal-Mart at like 4 in the morning. Woke up the next day, checked my account and called Chase. They just emailed me a form with the fradulent charges at the bottom. The form basically said 'You agree that you did not authorize this crap". I signed it, faxed it back, that next Monday the funds were back in my account. The also mailed me another debit card. No questions asked.
Huntington..wtfbbq?

Banks provide no service value that a brokerage account or other financial institution can't provideother than making cash available at almost no cost.
