I'm looking to do some web design on the side. What languages/programs are people looking for now-a-days? I want to put together a nice portfolio but I want to know what people are looking for before I start.

I know many but not a master of them all. I've programmed in Java, Javascript, VB, VBScript, C++, HTML, Flash, a little PHP, SQL, .NET. I just want to start brushing up on stuff but I want to know what is in higher demand.

PHP is likely your best bet (my language of choice) as far as server-side stuff goes. Chances are if you are doing stuff on the side for a small company or whatever they aren't going to care what you build the site with. You could tell them you coded it in gumdrops and horse farts and they won't care. With PHP being open source it's going to be the cheapest technology to use.

PHP was my first guess also. I've played around with it and it doesn't seem bad. I'll probably pick up a book to look more into it.

The first thing you need to know is that your clients aren't going to know what languages/programs they want or need. They want a solutions to their problem or need. It is up to you to figure out what language/program to use.
With that said, I personally use PHP for programming, and usually XHTML/CSS, with some Flash or JQuery to make thinks pretty and appealing.

A good CMS to learn is drupal. I've got a multi-site install on my VPS and can have a new site up and running in less than 10 minutes. It is written in PHP and you can customize the hell out of it.

Justin, I believe at one time there was a wrestling website, but it hasn't been updated for at least two years and I can't even find it now.
