Safety message to the Ohio State University community

Ohio State University Police and local public safety officials are investigating bomb threats to four campus buildings. OSU police were alerted by the FBI at 8:19 a.m. that bomb threats were received for The William Oxley Thompson Memorial Library, McPherson Chemical Lab, Smith Laboratory and Scott Laboratory.
Occupants of all buildings were evacuated and were directed to areas of safety. OSU Public Safety issued a Buckeye Alert at 8:41 a.m. to the campus community asking everyone to stay clear of those buildings. Text messages were sent to nearly 32,000 Buckeye Alert subscribers.
University public safety officials and university police continue to investigate along with the FBI and the Columbus Fire Department bomb squad. The affected buildings remain closed until further notice.
The OSU Department of Public Safety will hold a media briefing at 11 a.m. at Blankenship Hall, 901 Woody Hayes Dr.

I'm not on campus today because I am headed out to Oklahoma tonight, but by the looks of the buildings named, it is probably some pissed off chemistry student. SMH

Welp, I'm gonna avoid those areas today, I guess. My first class was cancelled, but I still have to go to my Calculus class, which is good for me cause I have a major question for our midterm tomorrow.

I don't think its any different than the ones that high schools receive every now and then. If anything the fact that a mass text is sent out plus every student is emailed right away should be a plus for the school.

i had two classes today and neither of them were cancelled, and it was made clear through email that our attendance was expected. It was annoying that i had to walk an extra 20 minutes around campus down high street to the oval then cut back down through the building to get to my classes, but thats to be expected i suppose.

I'm betting it was some moron who didn't study for exams. The distribution of the buildings that the bomb threat was called on was pretty erratic. Unfortunately, I still had Spanish and statistics :(

I certainly hope a student isn't that stupid. I don't know if we will hear more as things are investigated, but I wouldn't think it would just be a slap on the wrist if the FBI is able to determine who made the threat. I think I read that it was sent via email, so I'm not real sure how easy that is to track.

I work in IT and I can assure you that people are THAT stupid. One day someone stole their instructors password and logged into Carmen and changed their own grade.

Did he change everyone else's grade too? Nope, just his own. Got busted the same day.

So I don't doubt that it could be someone that stupid.

Just can't imagine being stupid enough to put the threat through. Yeah, I think today is a good day to put the FBI on my tail...

I would imagine they were smarter than that, although I hope not. I mean how hard is it to create an email on a public computer and then send the email? Not very. I just don't know how hard it is to track it back.

It can be done. The only way they could "buy some time" is if they proxied through a machine in another country. Even then, it probably isn't going to buy you very much "getting away" time.

I wouldn't be surprised if the culprit was caught by the end of the day today or tomorrow. Then again, I'm not sure they'll even announce they got him.
