Wow. I'm shocked! I don't think anyone saw this coming.

I don't know that he necessarily regrets leaving Boise, but I think that he definitely regrets leaving Boise for Colorado. The program wasn't great when Gary Barnett left but it's been an absolute mess since Hawkins arrived. I think this is part of the reason we've seen Chris Peterson turn down interviews at big schools to stay at Boise (he's also the highest paid public employee in Idaho).
Maybe he'll get a job coaching intramurals somewhere.

Probably, with the way the search has been going.
Brings up a good question though - which do you consider a better job at this point: Minnesota or Colorado?

The only shocking thing here is that he lasted this long. Sat game collapse was unbelievable.

Interesting question. I think I'd say Minnesota, but with hesitation. Their division of Michigan, Nebraska, Iowa, Michigan State and Northwestern is a bitch! I think for that fact alone it might be hard to win because Nebraska is on the verge of becoming a consistently elite team. Iowa is Iowa. Michigan State is doing very good things under DAntonio. Northwestern is MUCH improved and you just have to think that within 5 years Michigan will get it right.
Minnesota might be a bottom feeder, even with the right coach.

By that same measure though, Colorado is probably sitting at the bottom of their division right now They'll have to compete with UCLA, USC (So. Cal recruiting hotbed), Arizona (getting better under Stoops), Arizona State, and Utah (BCS bowl winners as recently as 2009). In a normal year, I'd say Minnesota is on par with Northwestern, slightly below MSU, and behind Nebraska/Mich/Iowa.
Of course, things shuffle around a bit year-to-year ... MSU is really good this year, Michigan has been iffy lately, Iowa has laid a clunker as recently as 2006. UCLA is down now, Arizona isn't traditionally good. It's pretty close as to which job is better, I agree. It will be interesting to see who goes where as I have a feeling the two schools will be pursuing some of the same names.

The moment Kansas won, it was very obvious that he was not going to survive. I will always remember him for the "go play intramurals, brother" rant

Minn is EASILY the better situation right now. From what I have read, Colorado has by far, the worst facilities in the Big12 and their university is in some serious financial trouble. So its not going to get better anytime soon.

Minnesota is the better job right now because of better facilities and because they will probably be offering a better salary than Colorado. However, Colorado is the better situation. Their league and division will be easier than Minny's and recruiting will be easier for them because they will be able to recruit in California with one game in that state every year, and they may be able to continue to recruit some in Texas. I think Colorado will be good sooner than Minnesota.

This is excellent news. I have an intermural team that needs a coach.

I think with the new facilities Minnesota tightened this race way up but I think you hit the nail on the head. As a head coach I would be more inclined to take the Colorado job because of the recruits from California and out west............. thats just my opinion and personal preference.

Regarding Colorado recruiting, I heard someone make a joke that kids in Colorado are much more inclined to ski in the winter than play football, so there is no talent. Minnesota has to have more instate talent than Colorado.

ESPN has reported that former coach Bill McCartney is interested in coming back and Colorado is said to possibly be interested in the 70yr old former coach.

Hiring an old dude that has been out of the game for almost a decade would not be wise. I'm 23 and I have never heard of him. Doubtful that an 18 yr old has either

Kansas St brought back their "old" coach this year, Snyder. McCartney had Colorado program going pretty darn good curing his time as coach. In 1990, Colorada was the AP national champ, sharing with Georgia Tech.

Snyder had only been gone a few years. This Colorado guy has been gone for much longer

Yeah, Snyder was only gone for three years I think. Much easier to come back after that than after more than a decade.
