MELBOURNE, Fla. -- An Orlando man broke a record by trapping the largest alligator in the state over the weekend.
Tres Ammerman and two of his friends went hunting Sunday night in Lake Washington near Melbourne.
The alligator was 14 feet 3 inches long.
Members from Florida's Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission confirmed that Ammerman's catch is a new state record.

654 pounds, over 14 feet. He plans to sell to a taxidermist at $1,000 per foot.

I wonder what Troy would call this one. He always had a name for the big gators he was hunting like Big Head & Loch Ness Monster.

I don't know that a taxidermist would pay $1000 per foot to have a pet.

Clearly you aren't depending on dead alligators for your income/livelihood.

This. Why the fuck do we kill everything? That belongs in a zoo, not some redneck's den. When it dies naturally, then stuff it and put it on display. He should be fined for being an asshole. :)

Why the hell do we have to lock everything up and look at it? That belonged in nature. lol

Zoos today do a very good job of replicating natural habitats. In most cases, they are better for animals then their natural habitat since they are properly fed and their health is monitored with vets. The zoological community has come a long way since cages and concrete. I know, I work for the company that does just about every construction project for the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium. For this reason, I think he should have been put on "live" display for people to enjoy.

Still, natural habitat beats death...so I don't completely disagree with you.

But does not beat alligator boots. Death is just a by-product.

I don't know. If dude is getting paid $1000 per foot and the average alligator is 10 feet, how many do you have to catch to make a good living?

Do they pay $1000/foot for average alligators? (I don't know, I'm just asking.) Plus, I prefer not to get eaten when I screw up at work. :)

No idea what the going rate...probably not that much or there'd probably be a lot more alligator hunters. I don't know. And agreed.
