During Thanksgiving dinner with the family, a topic of discussion involved someone my aunt knows who participates in a 100-person Thanksgiving. Apparently, what makes this unique isn't the size of the gathering, but the fact that the men do all the cooking.

I wholeheartedly support this idea for a very good reason. It would get us away from the "traditional" Thanksgiving dishes that are usually bland and/or hideously overcooked toward something that everyone can enjoy.

Turkey? Gone. Fried chicken would take its place. For those who prefer to avoid fried foods, chicken wings would be available. The standard question of "White or dark meat?" would be replaced with "What sauce do you want with your wings?"

Mashed potatoes? No more. They'd be replaced with platters of potato skins.

Stuffing? That's gone too. Mozzarella sticks with marinara can fill that void quite nicely.

Cranberry? No way. How about a huge tray of nachos instead?

So what would go on your ultimate Thanksgiving meal? What would get the boot and what would take its place?

Here comes that generation gap again, but for me, I really enjoy the traditional Thanksgiving celebrations. It's nice to get the family together at least once a year and celebrate joys, remember those who aren't there any longer, and just relax and look around and feel a peace and contentment that can only be experienced in such an atmosphere. I also have to tell you that I love wings and really hot "hot sauce" but not necessarily on Thanksgiving. I'll stay with the huge turkey being carved and passed from person to person. Cranberry sauce...not hot sauce. Not to mention boys, that Thanksgiving at my house is visit with each other, have a terrific meal, help clean up the kitchen, waddle into the family room, and watch football. Sometimes if the football is really bad, we've been known to watch a schmaltzy Hall Mark special that reminds us all that the football wasn't really so bad and we switch back to it. Ah, the joys of tradition!

Turkey, white
Mashed potatoes
Dry dressing, not stuffing.
Turkey gravy

Wine or water

That is it, nothing else.

Sorry, man. Hard to beat turkey, homemade mashed potatoes, stuffing, scalloped corn, sweet potatoes, and green bean casserole with a couple of big ladles full of gravy over the whole plate. Homemade pecan pie for dessert.

Wouldn't change a thing.

Ditch the turkey and dressing. Keep the ham. Add some seafood, red beans and rice. I want to go Cajun/Creole for thanksgiving. That's my task for next year.
