Anyone ever made the trek up there for camping, hiking, fishing, etc? A group of us are planning a trip up there for this summer so I thought I would ask around on here for any pointers if any has ever been up there.

As the Minnesota expert on the board, I'm shamed to say I've never been up that way.
One piece of advice though, bring LOTS of bug spray. The mosquitoes and black flies will be nasty in the summer.

Haven't been up there myself, but have a couple friends who have been there. Not sure what your plans are, but you may need to be prepared to have "primitive" conditions to live by. Prolly not a bad idea to plan the trip when Mrs. Incredible isn't "at that time of the month", given the wildlife in the area. Skeeter juice is a must as well.

She's not outdoorsy so she won't be going.
It'll be 4 (possibly 5) guys. We are cool with, and actually looking forward to, the primitive camping. I'll be picking up the RV from one of the guys parents in Newark and driving up to Chicago to pick everyone up. One guy lives there and the other two live in TX and OK so they will fly into Chicago. Then we'll drive through Milwaukee and catch a game at Miller park. Head up the Ely, MN the next morning and then set up a base camp with the RV and then take a couple different "expeditions" out as far as we can on foot. On the way back we will drive through Minneapolis to catch a Twins game and then head home.

Nah. We'll park the RV wherever the designated starting points are and head off and roam around for a few days. Then stop back by the RV to replenish our supplies and grab a warm shower and head off in another direction and roam around for a few days. The RV will also be used instead of staying at hotels on the way up and back.

Yes, sounds pretty sweet. I roughed it for a week a few years back. We were supposed to go to one spot deep in the woods at Carter Caves in Kentucky. Well, we accidentally went to the wrong spot, on private property. There was this primitive cabin about 200 yards from our campsite. Guys showed up, and luckily for us, they were all pretty nice. I'm not gonna lie... I was seeing Deliverance flashes in my head. Scary stuff.

Sounds fun. My ex, his family and friends (guys only) take a baseball trip each year and they camp. They've been to Boston, NY, Philidelphia, Chicago, Minneapolis and Cinci I think.

You just told him to DO get some ideas. Were you welcoming him with the "pervert" comment?

I went to Ely back in late 2002. It was the besttrip I have ever went on. We went canoeing for 10 days and traveled about 130 miles throughout the waters. We did alot of portageing but most of the time we had easy canoein waters. I think you have to have a permit to go into alot of the areas I'm not sure i didnt set up the trip. I do advise you to find a good camping site (if your canoeing you can pick from alot) that faces north. If you get a good clear night the northern lights are amazing. On the trip I saw a few awesome things including a seagull dip into the water and catch a fish only for the seagull to get grabbed by a bald eagle, A moose about 15 feet from my canoe on the shore, and a pack of wolves about 30 feet from me while i was carrying a canoe on my head. I would recommend renting a canoe and going out on the water for a few days motorized boats can only go about 5 miles into the waters and then only canoes and kayaks. The fishing up there was also awesome with the biggest bass I have ever seen. You can also see alot of old indian drawings on the cliffs of you keep an eye out. If you have any more questions feel free to ask but i recommend taking a couple more days off if you can and really living it up in the outdoors. OH Yeah make sure to find the Chainsaw Sister Saloon the greatest bar ever witht the greatest tasting beer ever see if you can find my ohio university dollar bill on the wall.
