A few weeks ago after Wisconsin upset the Buckeyes one of the writers from the Dispatch wondered if it was really a big enough win for the fans to have stormed the field after the game. My initial reaction was, "Of course! They just beat the #1 ranked team in the country." It also made me think of earlier this season when Colorado fans stormed the field after beating 1-4 Georgia. So, it got me think, when is it and isn't it appropriate to storm the field? So I figured that we could come up with an official set of guidelines that can be the standard for storming the field after a win. Here are my suggestions so far.

1. If you beat a team ranked #1 in any major poll (Coach's, AP, BCS) then you should storm the field.
2. If you have just clinched a birth in the National Championship Game then you should storm the field.
3. If you have just ended a long losing streak to your arch rival (especially if they were ranked higher and favored in the contest) then storm the field.
4. If it is the biggest win in program history, then storm the field (think Rutgers over USF in 2007 and over Louisville in 2008).
5. If you just won your conference championship for the first time in a long time, then storm the field (for instance, if MSU wins the Big Ten this year).
6. If your team beats a highly ranked (top 5) team for the first time in a long time then it may be appropriate to storm the field.

So, what do you think of this list? Should some of my rules be changed or thrown out? Should other ones be added? What say you, Ohio Chatter?

If you are Michigan or Notre Dame and simply win another game - no mater who it is - storm the field!

I don't think storming because you beat #1, when you are a consistent top 25 team and top 15 at the time, is really warranted. In my eyes, you storm when you are a major underdog, and pull off the almost impossible.

Krambman, I like the list, but I want to add something to it.

If you're a mid major and win a high profile game. I.e 2003 BGSU over NIU. NIU was just an undefeated MAC team (yea they were ranked). Gameday was there too.

Overall it was just another MAC game. BG ended up losing to Miami @ home in the MAC Championship that year. However, it received national attention.

BG was ranked that year too. It really wasn't much of an upset, if an upset at all.

I can somewhat agree with that. If USC beats Oregon this week, no they shouldn't storm the field. Last week, I wouldn't have had a problem in NW would have stormed the field after beating MSU.

But it was a high profile game and had the entire nation watching. That's why it was ok to storm the field. If ESPN/Gameday DIDN'T pay so much attention, then it wouldn't have been as warranted.

if you win an epic game then it's cool to storm the field in my opinion. Like if the OSU vs Minnesota game is an epic 10 OT battle and the bucks win. storm the field.

We stormed the field at UK this year when we beat Steve Spurrier for the first time ever (previously 0-17). South Carolina was ranked #10 at the time. The only other two occasions for which I could see us storming while I'm here would be beating Florida at home (they've won 24 in a row) or beating Tennessee at home (they've won 25 in a row).

In a close game, dont ever rule out LSU, even if there is no time left....lol

This looks like a good list, UC stormed the field after clinching their first Big East title in 2008 (It was our first BE title, first time to win the Rivalry game with Pitt, and we knew it was our first BCS bowl game) I can't think of any better reasons to storm the field than that game.

Any time you are in West Virginia....and it doesn't have to be a big win; it can be a loss. And it doesn't have to be a car; it can be a couch.

So then you can rush the field after any upset win? And Wisconsin may be a consistent top 25 team, but they also hadn't beaten a #1 ranked team in over 25 years either. Now, if USC knocks off #1 Oregon at home tonight then it probably wouldn't be appropriate for the SC fans to storm the field because they have been ranked #1 recently and are used to beating top teams. There's a big difference between Wisconsin and USC though. Wisky hasn't one a game like that in decades.

Kind of a spur of the moment decision imo. Depends on how the game went. USC shouldn't be rushing the field ever though.

But that win also solidified their legitimate shot at the conference title. Nothing really shows you aren't for real more than storming the field over one conference victory.

Storming the field should be reserved for monumental upsets by nobody programs and championships. That is all.

So then Buckeye fans shouldn't have stormed the field after beating Michigan in 2002 to go to the National Championship game, or in 2006 to go back to the title game after just defeating #2 and previously unbeaten Michigan in the biggest game in the 103 year history of the rivalry?

I guess I should clarify that by "championships", I include being conference champs.
