"I have great trust in my staff," Kelly said. "Defensively we didn't have a great answer today. But you know what, we've had answers all year defensively. And so we didn't have the answers today. We're going to have to go back and look at the film and find out. I got smart coaches. I got dedicated coaches. They're not dummies.

"The first thing I'd look at, I'd go, 'Shoot, basic fundamentals is stop the fullback.' Well he had 200 yards today and I don't have a bunch of dummies on my staff. We know that. My guys didn't have the plan today.

"We got to go back and look at the plan, we got to evaluate the plan, and if we have to change the plan moving forward, we're going to change the plan. but we're going to get it right. We've got too many guys committed to making sure Notre Dame gets back to where we believe it should be."

And they won. How does it feel losing again to another inferior opponent?

Like I said, enjoy your bowl loss, that's the definition of ND football.

You should be about to answer that yourself...How did it feel watching OSU lose to Wisconsin last weekend and Purdue last year?

after watching them yesterday and the way they manhandled OSU last week, I could see a case made for it--can't you?

Two of the biggest things for me out of Kelly's interview:
"Other big picture items would be turnovers on the offensive side of the ball. If we just take care of the football getting out of the half, we come out in the second half and make some adjustments and we're in much better position. If we get off the ball on the one-foot line and score... there are so many little things to point to in the game and they're not just all about defending the option."
Take away an idiotic interception and convert the fourth-and-inches and it's 17-14 Notre Dame at half. That's a good point from Kelly, he obviously is pissed about the turnovers his offense had. But he's subtly raging about the defense, he knows Diaco and Co. blew it. An admission of guilt:
"Let me make it clear: We're responsible for option. Whether it's mid-line, veer, speed, load, it doesn't matter. If we run against an option football team, we're responsible for all those phases. Our kids played really, really hard. They did what we asked them to do. This is accountability and responsibility that we have as coaches to make sure our players are well-prepared. We can't use the excuse that we haven't seen that before. We're responsible for option. We're going to make sure we're prepared against all forms of option moving forward."
Diaco will have his hands full with plenty of injuries on the defensive side and a Tulsa team that can put up points in bunches.

Double pad-locked and chained losses I should have said. HTF does ND "match up well with Utah"?...the fact that both teams will have 11 men on the field at the same is the only realistic match-up that game will see. Take the 6 - 6 and be happy it wasn't much worse.

Yes sir.

But who were they lucky to beat, since you say it could've been "much worse."

Both Purdue and Pitt were struggles that could have gone either way.

You could say the same about the Michigan and Michigan State games. So if we're saying that ND was lucky to beat Purdue and Pitt...then Michigan and Michigan State were lucky to beat ND.

Sorry, there's that damn logic rearing its head again. I know it has no place here...

Believe me if it were somehow possible for scUM and ND to both lose the same game I'd be the happiest guy alive.

You're missing the point. You said that ND fans should be lucky it wasn't "much worse" because they had wins over Pitt and Purdue that were struggles that could have gone either way.

But with that same logic, it could have been much better because they had losses to Michigan and Michigan State in games that could have gone either way.

I guess I never really thought either of those games were in jeopardy even when MSU "Clock-blocked" you...that is by far the highlight of the 2010 season to date BTW.

Purdue game could have gone either way? Did you watch the fucking game? Notre Dame was in control the entire game, never "lucky" to win it.

Pittsburgh is an underrated team and Notre Dame played them well, you're right, it could have gone either way. But so could the Michigan and Michigan State games. Boy it sorta sounds like the beginning of the season when I said there were a lot of games I could see Notre Dame winning or losing and only two were guaranteed wins, Western Michigan and Army.

Eh I could understand their preseason ranking with the players they had coming back. Dion Lewis has been a disappointment after being one of the top freshmen in the country last year. Baldwin was one of the top returning WRs too.

"Started," as in, past tense. Everyone thinks they suck now, which simply isn't true. They lost in OT to 8-0 #8 Utah, got stomped by a solid Miami team, and played an even game with Notre Dame. All were out of conference games, now that they're in the Big East schedule they're cruising. They'll probably finish 9-3, and around 15.

Completely different situations.

Ohio State is one of the premier programs in the country, playing in the toughest conference in the country, with some of the best talents and coaching possible in the world of college football.

ND is at best a mediocre program, with past successes that most people weren't even born to see. They haven't beaten a team as good as Wisconsin since back when Wisconsin wasn't in the cheese business.

Like I said, enjoy your bowl loss, what is this like 20 in a row now?

This was just weaksauce on so many levels. Most people weren't born yet? Cheese Business? 20 in a row? sleeper, you can do better.

Ohio State has faced one ranked Big Ten team, really the "toughest conference in the country?" They don't even play Michigan State this season during the only year Michigan State is actually choke-free.
