Someone explain this to me, Desean Jackson had both hands on the ball and trying to make the catch. Dunta Robinson absolutely dropped him...and he gets called for a hit on a defenseless player? He didnt lead with his head( or he would of ben called for that), so what is the defensive player supposed to just let the Wr's catch the ball?

it is a bullshit rule...simple response
They pretty much call it when they feel like it.

A DB pretty much has to let them catch it and come down before hitting them. Its BS. Might as well hit the guy and hope they dont call it imo.

Brandon Merriweather just hit Todd Heap helmet to helmet. He received a penalty.

Yeah, but it is so random...Cribbs got drilled by a helmet to helmet and is probably done for the game....no penalty on that one.

Not to mention Mo Mas got decapitated and no flag. And that was the definition of a defenless player, he didn't even have the ball.Brandon Merriweather just hit Todd Heap helmet to helmet. He received a penalty.

The hit two weeks ago right before halftime in the Bengals/Browns game where the Cincy defender hit the Browns WR right as he touched the ball and he got called for the "Hitting A Defenseless Receiver" ..... This call has been called basically whenever the ref decides he wants to call it...

I just saw the shot on Desean Jackson....that was the scariest hit I've seen in a long time.....and not penalty worthy IMO

Simplest way to get rid of hits like that... take away helmets and people won't throw their bodies around like missiles... although game speed would probably slow down and less "exciting" big hits.

I certainly hope Robinson doesn't get fined. That was a completely legal hit. Jackson would've caught the ball had Robinson not put the hit on him.

Yeah, not sure what Robinson is supposed to do in that situation...Let one of the fastest players in the NFL catch the ball in stride and take off?

That was a GREAT hit by Robinson. Right in the chest. Jackson was looking. Jackson HAD CAUGHT the ball. Jackson was about to take his second step since CATCHING THE BALL.

They definitely need to get a handle on this, the consistency in how the calls are made.
It seems like overall there were a lot of crushing hits on Sunday.

I didn't catch who was announcing in that clip, but he kept saying "we have to eliminate that play, I'm not sure how." Here's one idea, don't have your QB lead you into a defensive back so he can take your head off.
Jack Tatum is probably rolling in his grave about these rules.

Except for the part where he lowers his helmet and leads with crown. The major concern is using the helmet as a weapon not a safety device.

I don't think he "led" with the crown. He lowered his head a bit before contact on the other guy's SHOULDER.
Even so, bad form is not a penalty.

There were some really violent hits this weekend in the NFL. And this topic was heavily discussed on Mike and Mike this morning and is also addressed by Peter King in his MNQB. King referred to Rodney Harrison who said the only way to clean it up is to suspend players for the hits. The fine of $10k isn't going to do anything, but you make a guy sit for a game or two and they will learn to hit without leading with their head.

Maybe not but it is a good way to get yourself or someone else seriously injured.

I think they know the risks of the game. There is a reason they are making so much money.
