Forgive me, but why are they doing away with Colonel Reb?

Political Correctness. The school officially stated there was concern the mascot kept African-American students/student-athletes from enrolling at Ole Miss, thus the change.

'Rebel White Bear' would have been protested as racist.

They actually did try to work out an agreement with Lucasfilms to use Admiral Acbar as their mascot but Lucasfilms was unwilling to give them permission.

bigk, same with me. However, I'm sure the school knows their numbers and is trying to figure out how to diversify their campus and having an old white plantation owner for a mascot may be seen as a possible reason.

Either way, the black bear just seems out of place without a name change to correspond.

Wow how condescending can these idiots be? Its a racist slap in the face to all prospective African-American students to believe these young men & women might be basing their college choice on who / what the efn mascot might be.

...and doesn't the word "Rebel" conjure up images of slavery no matter whether its attached to a bear or an old man? Too bad Katrina didn't finish the job in Mississippi.

Well, I'm 1/2 black but fully don't give a shit if their mascot is a plantation owner.

If Ole Miss put as much thought and time into improving their academic reputation as they did their mascot, maybe more people would enroll.

Rebel Black Bear or Colonel Reb, it is still MISSISSIPPI.

Because obviously, their mascot isn't some rebel caricature (sarcasm alert).

Not sure if you have ever been to Oxford, MS but Ole Miss is one of the nicest campuses in the country. It very much looks like Miami (OH) in Oxford, OH with all of its brick buildings and green space. What's more, Ole Miss may have the hottest co-eds east of Arizona State. They are one of the better academic schools in the SEC (albeit they are a far cry from Vanderbilt which is nothing to be ashamed of).
