The sides are so far apart, I don't see how they can avoid it.

In addition, you've got Goodell on the owners' side, and he's not exactly one to really compromise on anything at all. His stubborn, power hungry personality trickles down to the owners, and the entire 2011-12 season is done for.

Also, the union seems a little more willing to fight this time. Upshaw was basically just the Comissioner's bitch (the one time they did strike, it accomplished nothing), and DeMaurice Smith seems more willing to raise some hell.

I think cooler heads will prevail at the end. The league has never been more popular and both sides know that. Just look at the ratings compared to the MLB playoffs. I also think the 18 game schedule is just a smokescreen by the owners just to get the union to except some concessions. I just hope they implement a rookie pay scale. I liked the days when teams would wheel and deal for that pick, now nobody wants it.

Not sure. I'll still be riding the high from the Jets Super Bowl win this year to even care, though. :)

Unfortunately every article I have read has said it is going to happen. Just seems unavoidable at this point. I have a feeling by the time they reach a settlement, it will be too late to start the season. This article breaks down everything you need to know about the lockout, including the possible effects http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ms-laborquestions090810. Some interesting points I caught in the article:

- NFL players could play their 2011 football season in the UFL while the lockout is occuring.
- There will be a draft, but teams can't sign the players until a new CBA is placed. They also can't sell rookie jerseys until a new CBA is placed.
- This wasn't in the article, but I figured the talent pool won't be as good in the 2011 draft if there is a lockout. I assume a lot of college players will stay another year until everything is resolved. Also, I assume the 2011 and 2012 draft will use the same draft order, so hopefully Cleveland does not fuck these drafts up this time.
- NFL players could possibly stage their own games
- No restrictions with endorsements. Players can endorse strip clubs or casinos if they want.

Way too much money would be lost for a lot of people if there was no season/a lockout. I think in the end they'll get it done.

Here's an article that further illustrates my point.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=5681923

Money talks guys. This doesn't even take into account how much the businesses in the cities (restaurants, bars, etc.) would lose if there was a lockout. When you start talking about billions with a B, then people tend to work out their problems. It's going to be tough to sell the fans on a millionaires vs. billionaires dispute when the economy is in the state it is. The NFL knows what happened to baseball and how/what it took to get it back (many say it hasn't fully gotten back). The NFL also knows that players will go play in the UFL if there's a lockout and doesn't want to give the competing league any advantages.

Mark my words, this will be worked out.

I hope I'm wrong but I think there will be a lockout. You would hope they would learn from MLB.

Would the NFL be able to fully recover from a lockout?

Would love to see both the NBA and the NFL shut it down...for 2 years or more. This would give us Cleveland fans a chance to chill out and get a life. I could use a nice break from being a miserable bastard, :)

There's a mountain of money. Even a "bad" deal for your side yields an enormous income for all involved. To risk killing, or at least injuring the goose that lays the golden eggs is stupidity on an epic scale.
