God speed Tony. One of the best hitters ever to play MLB.

I used to chew when I wrestled in high school. Me and my buddies saw it as a way of losing weight.

I hope he can fully recover without having any drastic side effects. I remember our baseball coach in college would show a video about dipping and a guy who got cancer had part of his tounge and lower jaw removed. Hope Tony (or anyone) doesn't have to endure that.

Yeah some of those pics they used to show are horrific. Hopefully it doesn't come to that for him but he will serve as an example of why you shouldn't chew/dip.

Of course it was the culprit. You think he just happened to get cancer of the mouth and the chewing had no effect?

It isn't any nastier than smoking cigarettes...

Smoking is repulsive yes....but seeing guys carry around a water bottle full of tobacco residue and saliva while they dip....little more disgusting.

Why do I? B/c growing up..my dad dipped. He wasn't a smoker. So that's just what I leaned towards. I stole chew instead of cigarettes.

If it's just that your face is missing, with a little thought, you can become a very effective real life super villain.

I think there might be a generational gap involved here. Once a long time ago, it was considered "manly" to chew/dip tobacco. In fact, if you go back to the early part of the 20th century, cigarettes were considered girly. Real men chewed tobacco and smoked a pipe/cigar. Think of all the imagery from early movies, advertisements, etc. depicting a cowboy out in the wild west with a big hunk of chew in their mouth. Years ago, baseball players also chewed. Many today under the age of 35 have been educated that chewing tobacco is gross. Big difference in time and place.

This. Besides this generation seems to be ditching the cigarettes/tobacco for something a little stronger and greener.

I played baseball all the way through the first 2 years of college when I blew out my shoulder. I was obviously surrounded by chew all the time, but I never once did it. I am glad I did not.

TG is one of the top 3 hitters of all time in my opinion, God speed to him.

As mentioned... it is kind of a generational thing. I can remember Earl Campbell doing "Skoal" commercials on TV back when he was "the man." Remember him walking off down the beach with the babe tossing the football saying... All it takes is just a pinch "skoal brother" LOL

The problem with me was that I was hooked on smokeless tobacco long before it was known how unhealthy it reall was. It was very, very hard to quit. I chewed Copenhagen for twenty years and have not had any in almost 9 years. I tell every person I know that is young... do not ever start any tobacco products. I feel somewhat like a hypocrite buying stock in Altria. :)

Tony is one of my all-time favorites.... A great all-around baseball player, and seemingly a very, very good guy! Fond memories of catching all three games in a series with the Reds back in Eighties.
