Old School Coaches/Mentality

To spin off from the posts from another thread, I wanted to delve more into the issues of "old school" coaching and things the coaches did then that they would get arrested for/fired/suspended for today. Here are some examples I experienced:

* I already mentioned in the other thread about how my wrestling coach would pit individuals who were fighting on the mat on their knees and make them slap one another until one quit.
* HS baseball coach used to intentionally bean players in practice, particularly if you were crowding the plate, he was upset at you or he was just generally in a foul mood. I remember he pegged me in the rib cage during one at bat (can't remember why). He knocked the wind out of me. He made me yell as loud as a I can it did not hurt.
* In the offseason, the football coach used to tie a pole to the bed of his truck and make individual players hold on while he drove (granted he just rode right around the school grounds and the road surrounding). Said it was great to develop speed.
* Said football coach would actually limit or restrict water intake on hot days. He believed it was not good for you.
* Obviously language was different much then. Being called derogatory terms like ladies, girls, a slang term for female genetalia, a slur for gays that rhymes with maggot along with the standard fare of f-bombs, a-holes, etc. were part of daily discourse.

I am sure there are many other things that either do not come to mind right now or perhaps I don't even consider could be shared. Any one with some old war stories?

Kick basketballs at us in practice

I think the cool thing was that nobody ever went home crying to mom and dad, now kids complain about everything

My 8th grade football coach used to punt the ball on us while we were during warm-ups and stretching. He would really crank it up when we were on the ground during hurdling stretches or whatever. If you moved, you had to run.

I've had basketball coaches kick and throwing things in the locker room quite often. One of my coaches kicked the ball bag full of basketballs and one of them flew out of the bag and hit somebody in the face. Kind of hard not to crack up laughing while he's going balistic.

But as for the one about limiting water intake because he believed it wasn't good for you, that's just plain stupid.

Everything in this thread is retarded. What about playing sports makes it okay for old men to throw shit at their kids and use derogatory terms? What good does that do?

Answer: It's stupid and useless.

Coaches don't do that crap anymore because it didn't make for a good team. And it's also stupid.

I had a basketball coach throw a ball and hit me.square in the sac during a passing drill in practice. Needless to say I never lobbed a chest pass ever again.

During two a days in football we had to bear crawl accross the field to get a drink of water once during each session water was not allowed any other time.

This.

Good coaches don't do that stuff anymore because they've finally realized that it doesn't really make a difference, they are better off actually being a good coach and showing the kids what they need to do without acting like a 12-year old kid in the process.

dont think it has anything to do with being a good team. its teaching kids not to be pussies and crying because they finished in last place and didnt get a trophy.

I coach and it's still fun to punt the ball at them every once in awhile!

We used to throw the football at kids as they were running. They have helmets on, and are padded up, so I don't see the big deal.

Things like punting the ball or maybe throwing a ball at kids with a helmet and pads on aren't what I'm talking about.

But hitting kids with baseballs, basketballs, etc. Restricting water usage and such is just stupid. It isn't making the kids any better at the sport, which is the coaches job, and it certainly isn't going to make them not be pussies.

Coaches not throwing shit at their team isn't what made kids want a participation (last place) trophy.

And now we've got Emo and kids dressing up like vampires and werewolves everyday. Thanks Pinkos!

Had a coach who painted a pillar in the locker room with the words "Pussy Club" and if you quit the team he would peel the name tape off the front of the quitter's helmet and put it on the Pussy Club pillar. Twenty - five years later at a class reunion some guy was bragging it up about how he was now some big-shot surgeon in Kansas City. And one of my former jock buddies said "Yeah...but you were still in the Pussy Club" and the guy just dropped his head and slunk away. Did he get the last laugh making the big bucks? ...maybe...but that Pussy Club branding will be with him forever.

So he didn't want to play football in high school anymore and that makes him a pussy...even decades later. Right...

Hard work and skilled coaching makes for good teams. Not stupid name calling and completely idiotic things like limiting water intake. Doesn't mean you have to hold everyones hand but a positive atmosphere will almost always have better results than a negative one.

His main mistake was actually bothering with a class reunion.

There's good and bad about both the way it used to be and today. Sure, some of the older coaches did things that were a lot tougher which is just fine, but they also did things that were insane. One of the main things I think affects it is not necessarily that today's children are whiners, but that children back then were too afraid to do anything. While some people may say that today's children don't respect their elders, the argument could also be made that today people are willing to question things, whereas before children were taught that someone older than you is unconditionally right and cannot be questioned simply because they are older and have authority. This is an unbelievably stupid train of thought, and this is where we get the stories about some of the more insane coaches. A lot of the people who call others disrespectful today are just pissed that someone actually is challenging them.

Now, there are plenty of disrespectful children today, but by and large it's moreso just children actually having the balls to stand up for themselves for once.

Had a football coach that up until the year before I played HS ball gave the players saltine crackers & salt tablets and didn't permit water breaks. Up until that time I believe that was considered acceptable. Also had a coach that kicked a kid square in the the nuts . That type of behavior is NEVER condoned but, to be honest, the kid deserved it.

I graduated two years ahead of you from a neighboring school. I sure do remember being given salt tablets when we were thirsty. Can you imagine the uproar if a coach did that today?

Did coaches give salt tablets and withhold water as punishment? I thought they were trying to train kids to be able to go without water. It sounds crazy now, but wasn't that the expected norm back then? (As in the medical field did not understand how harmful that was)

They were distributed to replace the sodium you lost through sweat. Brilliant.

Salt tablets were the norm back in those days. I also was of that same era. In fairness to the coach, that was the prevailing thought of the time so it is a little hard to come in now and say they were stupid and that it does nothing to promote teamwork/make you a better player.

As to whether or not these coaches behavior or toughness made a team better there may be some debate. I played multiple sports and I can say that the coaches I listed above, where also the ones who could get the most out of their players and taught you could win with sheer hardwork, teamwork and discipline.

I'll buy the salt tablet thing. But withholding water is just as stupid then as it is now.
