Basically, they expanded the reasons that allow them to call a T, all are directed at players bitching.
At the referees' annual meeting in Jersey City, N.J., on Thursday, the league announced the guidelines for technical fouls will expand to include "overt" player reactions to referee calls.

Referees have been instructed to call a technical for:
• Players making aggressive gestures, such as air punches, anywhere on the court.

• Demonstrative disagreement, such as when a player incredulously raises his hands, or smacks his own arm to demonstrate how he was fouled.

• Running directly at an official to complain about a call.

• Excessive inquiries about a call, even in a civilized tone.

In addition, referees have been instructed to consider calling technicals on players who use body language to question or demonstrate displeasure, or say things like, "Come on!" They can also consider technicals for players who "take the long path to the official", walking across the court to make their case.
Now, they have tried this before and it doesn't work, because god forbid something be called on a superstar (the whiniest ones of all). Will it work? Will they call it?

This is dumb. There will be like 4 techs a game.

Good. They are the whiniest bunch of crybabies in all sports. I hope they enforce this strongly in the preseason so they might actually play without the dramatics once the regular season rolls around.

Better raise the technicals allowed before ejection limit....

This is great if enforced (which I have my doubts about). The crying after fouls is TERRIBLE in the NBA. One of my biggest pet peeves about the game is how much they complain.

A step in the right direction, but the superstars are still too protected and this rule will not apply to them.

I may be in the minority here, but I think its a bit too much. I can understand T'ing up a player for verbal abuse, but for whining? Come on, this isn't AAU youth basketball. These are grown men playing professional basketball. Granted, a lot of them do not act like grown men, but if they want to create an immature image of themselves then let them whine.

What's next? Are refs going to start T'ing up players for talking trash to each other?

If you can get a T for sitting on the bench and smiling, I'm sure they can T up a player who acts like he just got shot and charges at the refs complaining.

Pretty much guarantees Kobe will be only playing about half a game.

Lebron won't be playing very many full games either if they actually enforce this on the superstars. Ha, fat chance of that.

That would probally make it more fair to the rest of the league and give the other teams a little hope of dethroning the back to back Finals MVP and Champion....................but on 2nd thought it wouldn't matter half of Kobe is still better than anyone else in the league.

Tim Duncan may not get to play and that is fine.....almost every call made on many of the stars are questioned.....no other sport even close to the whining......I hope they really follow through.

I hope this is enforced exactly as it is written.

I would also like to see technical fouls be added to their personal fouls total.

It will not change anything and will only open the door for a ref to make a huge, game-changing call in an important game without being punished for doing so.

Good point. I read Tim Donaghy's book, and he explained how refs made calls based on their personal bias (i.e. they hate rasheed, they call more fouls on him). This rule will just allow refs to make more calls based off their personal bias.

On a side note, LeBron was the first player I thought about when I saw this thread. Even as a Cleveland fan his whining was annoying. If this rule is really enforced, LeBron won't be seeing the 2nd half as well.

That's what I was thinking. There is too much whiny bitchitis in the NBA and I would be in favor of this...if I had more faith in NBA officiating. Right now, though, I'm having this nightmarish vision of Joey Crawford utterly ruining a playoff game (or attractive match-up) on national TV because his incompetence has been doubled by giving him even more reasons to blow his whistle.

All it takes is 1 week of this ACTUALLY being enforced for guys to stop the whining. Not sure itll happen though.

Stupid ass rule. They react to calls. IMO, the only reason we fans find it irritating is because we can actually see it when an NBA player bitches about a call or no call. Unless it's close up, nobody can see an NFL player bitching, nobody can see a catcher bitching about the strike zone, etc.
