This IS great news. Anything HBO touches turns to gold. And if its narrated by Liev Schreiber it will probably be amazing.

I love HBO specials. This is going to be awesome. It seems (maybe because its a smaller audience) that teams/actors/etc give a ton more access to HBO than to anyone else. It might also be HBO can air whatever they want, which means they dont have to edit stuff. Either way, they have BY FAR the best programming out there.

I really don't pay attention too much Hockey outside of the NCAA, but I will definitely tune in for this. Hopefully it is like Hard Knocks NHL style.

Aren't these two teams forced down our throat enough? Ugh. Yea, I know, you don't have to watch, blah, blah, blah. But these two teams always seem to get all the Sunday games on NBC and Pittsburgh is having it's second Winter Classic. There is a lot more to NHL hockey than Crosby and Ovechkin. Thanks for pimping these two players more, Bettman. You suck.

This is the best thing to happen in the NHL in a while. Salary Cap being first. Having the two BEST players in world play against each other in the NHL's marque game not named the Stanley Cup. Having HBO come in as well. It's great for the game for marekting purposes to try and get a larger audience.

While I think the NHL has showcased these two (and in turn their teams) a lot and they should branch out to showcase and promote some other great players and teams like Chicago (especially with the Americans), Detroit, San Jose, etc. This is fantastic for the NHL. HBO will get the HBO viewers and the NHL fans will also watch it. You have the 2 best players in the league facing off NY Day in what has been the most watched NHL game over the last few seasons outside the playoffs. Its good for the NHL. I just hope they put some other great and exciting teams on it next year ANNNND HBO picks it up again.

I agree that it's great for the NHL to get viewers, but why showcase the only two guys the non-hockey fans know anyway? Like Laley said, show some new faces. They could showcase Toews, Stamkos, Ryan Miller, or Zetterberg. I understand you're a homer and Crosby can do no wrong, but most of the non-Penguin fans are tired of the Crosby vs. Ovechkin thing. I don't see this creating a whole lot of fans of the sport. I mean does the Winter Classic make fans? Maybe some, but a majority go back to watching bowl games after it's over and never watch hockey again until next year. Did the Olympics create more NHL fans? Maybe some, but the majority have forgot about the great USA vs. Canada games and never tuned in again once the NHL games fired back up again.

Isn't it NBC who calls the shots on who plays on sundays? If it is the case, thats why Pitt, Philly, NYR, Bos, Wash, Chicago, and Detroit are on all the damn time. Mainly due to markets and ratings.

Speaking of showcasing US players they ought to show the Devils more, considering the best US forward plays for them in Zach Parise. If they wanted to show the best US defenseman in Ryan Suter (who is better than Shea Weber btw) nobody would watch due to them playing in a small market, Nashville. They could try and show more Sabres games and market Miller some more but, other than him idk if NBC would want to show the Sabres due to the fact that they really don't have any big name guys outside of Miller. They could try and showcase Tomas Vanek or Tyler Myers. As for western conference teams playing on NBC it's harder to show them if they're playing at home due to the time difference. Usually NBC's games start either at 12:30, 1:00, or 1:30. I would love for them to show more Wild, Stars, Blues, and Avs games. But for teams in Alberta, Vancouver, and the West Coast it's pretty much impossible to show them unless theres a double header for that day. As for Canadian teams, they've got their own WC as it's The Heritage Classic.

I don't care that HBO is doing it. The fact there is going to be a documentary special on Hockey is a joke. WNBA special series would be more interesting than this.

Actually it does hold interest to me. The show will be on my favorite premium channel, and I am shocked they would stoop to this garbage when they only provide good tv. I guess HBO can make garbage look great though.

Take a look at attendance--those "niche" fans fill the arenas the same as the NBA, which went from a league that people cared about to the trash they call basketball today.

NBA ratings are down from when the NBA was good and actually playing basketball. NHL ratings are going up each year.

NHL ratings and Soccer ratings are BOTH trending towards overtaking MLB and NBA ratings. At the current pace it will be a few years, but its trending that way (more with MLB, whose ratings blow).

The olympics's helped with the NHL's raitings going up.
