I can't believe I am even typing that given what a pariah he was a few seasons ago, but should they consider bringing him in this off season when he is a free agent?
He will just be turning 31 during the next training camp, so he has probably a 5-6 year window of still being able to play at a high level especially since he had all that time off mid career where he wasn't taking much of a pounding. So in that respect, it is not just a short stop gap measure as he could be a longer term solution at the position.
Mangini won't make it through the year, and you know whoever Holmgren hires will be a disciple of his tree and will probably run an offense very similar to what he has been doing with Andy Reid/Marty Mornhinweg (both of the Holmgren tree) the past 2 years so it wouldn't be a huge transition.
From what we have seen of Vick this year, he seems to have really matured as a passer and can still make things happen with his legs when necessary. He was rusty last year, but has clearly gotten his legs/feel back this year.
Since he is a free agent, and QB's are so hard to find I would actually be in favor of it at this point. If nothing else, it would make them much more interesting offensively than the misery we are continually subjected to as well as giving them a chance to win immediately. He is still young enough that it could fill the position for a while, and he seems to have really grown as a QB compared to the guy we saw in Atlanta. 2 years with Andy Reid/MM is bound to improve a QB as they are fantastic teachers of the position.
I will always think the guy is a scum bag because of the dog fighting, but he has paid his dues to society and deserves a second chance. He can still play, and in this league that is the most important thing. He is in his prime, and it is rare to have happen with a free agent QB.
The playing it safe route is getting this team no where fast, so I think it is about time to start taking some chances and this might be a good place to start.
