OK, so at my work we have to make DVD recordings of focus groups. All we do is have a static camera hooked into the DVD recorder, in this case it's a Sony recorder(but we use different brands too). The recorders are never moved and basically only turned off and on and used to record.

We give these DVDs with a sticky label on them to our clients after the groups or we ship them somewhere. We have one client who, the last 3 times he's been with us, hasn't been able to get the DVDs to play. The DVDs are finalized and play perfectly fine in our Sony units at the office, as well as an OLD Panasonic player/recorder. But they won't play in a newer Panasonic recorder/player. It makes NO sense to any of us at my office, nor the AV company we use. Our client said, he ripped the label off the DVD and it played fine. And now my branch and asst. branch manager think the problem is the label. Even though I AND our AV guys have told them it's not.

So today, I bring home the 2 DVDs in question. One with a label and one without. I play them in my generic DVD player at home; they work fine. I try to play them on my laptop(yes it has a DVD drive), no dice. When I try to play them on my laptop it's says that I have put in a blank CD; but obviously it's not.

So anyway, do any of you techies out there have any advice I can tell my managers?? Other than it's not the labels.

Make sure to put black tape over the red light so she does not notice the recording occurring.

If its not a big account I say you tell the guy to jump off a bridge. He is probably technologically challenged and a waste of time to your day everytime he calls.

It may be the DVD Media. Not all DVD players play both DVD-R and/or DVD+R. I'd check the specs on the DVD drive to see if both are compatible. If so, I dunno. (for your laptop that is)

I don't think Labels would cause issues but I've seen stranger things. Send them another DVD without the label and see what it does.

It's not one of our bigger accounts, but he/his company is a longtime client.

I've tried telling my managers that, but they seem to think I'm full of shit. I told them that not all DVD players will play a DVD even though they think that is not true. I even showed them the instruction booklet from one of our recorders were it says the finalized DVD SHOULD play on MOST DVD players, but not guaranteed.

It's definitely the client's dvd player. Surprise the guy with a new free DVD player that can play your DVDs.

That's a great idea since most DVD players cost less than $100 now.

You know what's funny? When I started this job 6 years ago we had 3 of them in our storage closet. We donated them to Goodwil, couldn't believe they even took them.
