Oaks trip Blue Devils, 50-39

Visiting Oak Hill jumped off to a 15-3 first period lead, then went on to hand host Gallipolis Gallia Academy a 50-39 hardwood setback in the new GAHS gymnasium Tuesday night.

More than 1,000 fans were on hand for the second annual Foundation Game. Proceeds from the exhibition contest will go toward Holzer Center’s “Fight Against Cancer” and Jane Hatfield for “Athletes in Action.”

Oak Hill, defending Division 4 state champions of Ohio, forged ahead 9-0 during the first five minutes of play before Jordan Cornwell’s trey at the 2:55 mark got GAHS on the scoreboard.

The Jackson Countians were up 20-4 before Gallipolis reduced the count to 20-9 on a layup by Jared Golden and another trey by Cornwell just before intermission.

Gallipolis committed 13 turnovers in the first half (nine in the first period), but settled down the final two periods to tie the Oaks at 30-30. Actually, after the first period, GAHS outscored the visitors, 36-35. The Gallians finished with 18 turnovers.

The Blue Devils pulled within four points (24-20) with 4:26 left in the third period behind the sparkling play of Jared Golden, Chuck Calvart, John Troester and Ethan Moore. However, Oak Hill led 36-25 after three periods.

Oak Hill built up its biggest lead, 15 points, (45-30) with 4:44 left to play on a driving layup by Jess Slone, who paced Oak Hill’s scoring attack with 13 points.

Kyle Ondrea, last year’s hero in Oak Hill’s state championship victory in Columbus, finished with 11 markers despite being on the bench with three personal fouls in the first half. Two other Oaks had eight points apiece, Austin Brown and Nick Gaines.

Oak Hill sank 19 of 34 field goal attempts for 55.9 percent. The Oaks were 10 of 18 at the foul line for 55.5 percent. Oak Hill had 26 rebounds, seven each by Brown and Slone. The visitors had 13 personal fouls, committed 14 turnovers and had several blocked shots.

For Gallipolis, Cory Eberfeld paced the Blue Devils with eight points. Golden added seven, Cornwell and Moore six each and Calvart five.

Gallipolis connected on 13 of 41 field goal attempts for 34.1 percent, including six treys. However, at the foul line, GAHS sank only three of 15 for 20 percent. GAHS had 17 personal fouls, 21 rebounds, led by Golden’s seven snags.

GAHS will conclude pre-season play against visiting Waverly and Washington CH on Saturday, Nov. 28, beginning at 9 a.m., in the new GAHS gym.
