Well, it's been going on for about 5 or 6 weeks. It seems like about every other night I get wakened by the barking of the neighbor's dog. I'm looking into options. So far I've been dealing with it by turning on the bathroom exhaust fan and drowning out the barking. I'll eventually wear out the fan by doing that. Eventually I'll probably need to talk to the neighbor about it - even though I don't know them (recent move-in).

I'm open to suggestions from any wise individuals here.

Just go and talk to them in a respectful manner and they will probably do something to curb the dog from carrying on.
There's a reason the dog is barking like that. Other critters, wanting in the house, hungry, etc.

If they won't do anything about it.... call the cops (even though I hate this idea).

That's how I did it. Use the bathroom fan and just drown it out...then I got pissed one night and left a note on the neighbors door. Dog hasn't barked since.

Is the dog barking more, or are you just sleeping lighter for whatever reason? I ask because you don't want to piss off the neighbor if nothing has changed on their end.

No, I'm not sleeping any different except for the dog. It's either already barking when I am trying to get to sleep or I can't get back to sleep after the nightly whiz. Nothing has changed except the dog moved in several weeks ago.

If the neighbors ARE LETTING their dog bark at all hours of the night, I have a strong hunch YOU have a problem on your hands, because they obviously don't care.

Dogs bark. Plain and simple. No matter how much control you have over your dog, it will bark if it wants to.

My suggestion. Get over it. There is nothing you can do about it. This coming from a guy who has a dog that barks at its own shadow.

this is why dogs are so annoying. When you are trying to sleep, they never shut up.

I understand what you are trying to say, but I disagree...It's great to have animals, but when you can't control them and your neighbors are suffering for it then that is when there is a problem, regardless the animal.

speaking from experience, it's not a good idea to get shit faced and at 4:30 am, rip your ohio state flag off of the side of your garage and use the pole to try and skewer the dog with a javelin style heave. the whole while don't yell obscenities and bark like a mad man. police WILL ask questions...

Talk to the neighbor first, but if that doesn't work (and I am guessing it won't), then proceed with above item.

that's a great idea, the barkoff deal, but seriously just go talk to the neighbor. If they're halfway decent, sane people I'm sure they'll e willing to come to some sort of a compromise on it

You might check but most towns have a law regarding this too. Get the police to issue a warning if talking to the neighbor doesn't work.

Our lot size is very large but a barking dog at 1:00 and or 3:00 in the morning is a problem with the window open. After three nights of the barking dog, I went outside and walked to where the dog was barking. It was not any of my direct neighbors so I don’t know this family.
I dropped off a note in their mail box stating that they have 2 days to correct the problem and after the three day I will be calling to police (no matter what time at night) if I’m up so will you and the police be up…

I called the cops... simple
After three trips the cop provide the owner with a warning and the next trip was a ticket and a court date and fine of $150.00. If additional call is made and the police find that the dog is still barking the fine is $250.00, the third time the court many order the owner to remove the dog from the area…. Plus $500.00 fine…
Also the police will check for dog licenses.

You will have to show up to court at this time…

You may want to send them first a letter stating the facts and the fine cost of a barking dog…and the police and court action…
