For anyone who follows underground music, you know that Dream Theater is one of the most technically skilled and talented bands around. You also know that Mike Portnoy is undoubtedly one of the best drummers in the world, and he filled in for Avenged Sevenfold on their new cd since their old drummer died, and is now touring with them. Tonight he left dream theater, and this sucks because DREAM THEATER OWNS A7X, and I for one will be pissed if he joins them! rant over

he probably realized that no matter how much better dream theater is, they will never sell out large venues. He got a taste of that with avenged sevenfold and probably likes it... after all, they've been playing for what, 25 years together, and their only breakthrough moment came in 1992.

Considering that Dream Theater has had many of their albums debut in the Billboard top 50 (including their most recent, which debuted at #6), I wouldn't call them underground, unless it's from the perspective of radio rock/metal, which can best be described as "Music By Pussies For Pussies". But they never looked for radio rock accolades, which is obvious in how they made so many 8-10-12 minute songs that were complex, as opposed to three-minute songs featuring three chords.
Kind of a frustrating thing to me how it seems, particularly in this country, that talented bands that don't fit the media-made persona (American Idol, attention whores like Lady Gaga/Katy Perry) get swept under the carpet. Most countries debuted the new Iron Maiden at #1 on their charts...only reached #4 here. Who needs talent when you can just hype the next generic "big thing" to the moon and all the 'tards will jizz their pants over it?
