The NCAA ruled today that because he was dismissed from Oregon, Jeremiah Masoli will not be able to play this year. Houston Nutt has said he will appeal the decision.

Good. Shouldn't benefit from finding a loophole. If he wasn't a knucklehead to begin with he'd still be in Eugene.

Why? He wouldn't be the first, and certainly wouldn't be the last.

I have mixed feelings on this. Although he screwed up and this is probably the right decision, each University has different rules of conduct and just because he was dismissed at Oregon doesn't mean he would have necessarily been dismissed at a school like Cincinnati or Ole Miss.

Yeah, this is an odd one. I mean, a waiver is at the NCAA's discretion, so I guess its their decision. But, anytime you start making up rules or talking about "intent" of a rule then you're pretty much saying that you half-assed it from the beginning and now you're mad that people are taking advantage of it.

The rule has basically two qualifications - you have to be enrolling in a graduate program and your old school can't offer the same graduate program. Correct? He met those - he graduated and he's studying something that he can't study at his old school. He was a student in good standing (just not a player in good standing).

I find the guy to be a giant douche and probably a liar (based on the interview he gave where he tries to make it seem like he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time), but that there isn't a "can't be a giant douche" clause in the rule for the waiver.....until now, maybe.

I would hope robbery would be a disqualifier at any university, but sadly would not be surprised if it was not.

That's my problem with this. He met the "guidelines" that were set forth as a college graduate pursuing a grad program.

I haven't followed Masoli's situation very closely, but didn't some details come out recently that put him in a more favorable light, in terms of the robbery?

He did some interview where he said he really didn't take anything and (I think) he didn't know the guy he was with took something but he plead guilty because his attorney said it'd be better for him in the long run (he ran the risk of much greater punishment by trying to fight it in court).

Personally, I found just about every line he said to be the classic failure to take any real responsibility. Good PR, but I've seen enough that I don't really buy it for a second. Doesn't mean he shouldn't try (or even get the opportunity) to go somewhere else, but not really anything different than what thousands of criminals say.

Glad the NCAA isn't allowing the SEC to thumb its nose at the rules. About time they actually slapped an SEC team for some infraction. Now go find all the shit Urban is doing with the Gators.

You mean the same things that are going on with the Buckeyes?

Last time I checked, neither school was guilty of major infractions but both were guilty of minor infractions.

Masoli won his appeal and is eligible to play per Joe Schad.

That's the right decision, IMO.

Even if Masoli is doing it to circumvent the rules, you really can't prove that. Because of that, you can only look objectively at the facts. The facts are, he abided by the waiver rules.

What happened at Oregon (with behavior and what not) has no bearing on what should happen at Ole Miss.

Kid is a bad dude, but you can't let that factor into the decision. He graduated, left Oregon enrolled in grad school and still had eligibility. There have been other cases (Ben Mauk) where players were allowed to do this... not sure why Masoli was declined in the first place

Fowler must not have gotten the updated cue cards. Masoli is eligible to play and will play. He won't start the game.

ESPN doesn't know what they are doing....

Also, gameday is worse with EA.
