Hey, I've found cheaper insurance with Progressive and I was wondering if there would be a fee or anything to cancel my current insurance and switch over? I'm currently with Nationwide and we pay month to month, so there isn't any worry about already paying the premium and not getting the money back. I was just wondering if anyone has ever done this, do I just write a letter for the company and send it to them? Thanks.

Just call and cancel. It's really that simple.

I am probably wrong, but I was always asked when my current policy expires...then they set it up for that date. I paid month to month as well, but the policy were given at 6 month increments....so I had to wait to switch for a couple months.

No you didn't. This is one time lj is correct. Call and cancel whenever you want. They will refund you on any money paid.

yeah...I figured. It was probably just easier to set it up for them.

Just make darn sure you have the official declaration of the new policy in hand before you cancel the old policy. My nephew had a accident at 11 PM on the first day of coverage with his new carrier - it took over a year to settle the claim.

Used to work in auto/home insurance, and SO many people thought that once you signed up for a policy you can't cancel. If your new company is good, they will send a cancellation letter to your old company, however, I would just do it yourself, and make sure you get any unpaid premiums sent to you.
