Anybody know knows anything about college football knows that he was pushed out. I thought he did a great job last year of leaving gracefully while still letting everyone know that it was not his idea to retire. He kept making comments like it's time for Jimbo to take over, but I still feel like I can coach," or "Well, I feel like can still be effective and would like to have coached a little longer, but it's time." I think I felt like most fans that the it was awful the way Florida State forced him to retire on their terms. This is just more evidence that naming a coach-in-waiting is a horrible idea.

I'd have to say FSU was right in pushing him out. In the past few years, the program had gone from one on the short list of "nation's best teams year-in and year-out" to an average/above-average major program. He's an icon and all, but I think universities have to look at the present and future and the FSU program seemed to really be faltering under him. It's the ugly side of having a legendary coach -- the inevitable fall either as they finish their career or right afterwards.

they've been pretty mediocre since the 99 championship. fsu gave him some leash to get things figured out but it never materialized

Hey, did you hear Jerome Bettis is from Detroit? Or that AJ Hawk is dating Brady Quinn's sister?

I think the AD was tired of Bowden coming into his office and saying "Daggumit, I still am the head coach here".

Boo fucking hoo.

Major academic scandal + downfall to irrelevance + annual beat down at the hands of Florida = fired. He's lucky they didn't push him out sooner.

He had his issues at FSU, but they're good kids.

the academic scandal involved 61 athletes across 10 sports. how relevant is the FSU basketball? did they fire the basketabll coach? yea maybe they should have ran out before OSU a beating in sugar bowl.

Florida State was more patient than I would have been. Aside from all of the scandals Bowden's teams were involved with (Free Shoes University, the academic scandal), his performance has been average to below average for almost 10 years. Florida State gave him time, he just never got things going in the right direction.
