Game Preview: Browns vs. Rams

As a special way to welcome in the 2010 season, the Cleveland Browns will treat their fans to a fireworks show immediately following their preseason home opener against the St. Louis Rams Saturday night.

The Cleveland Browns hold their 2010 preseason home opener Saturday night against the St. Louis Rams at Cleveland Browns Stadium tonight. It is the Rams’ first preseason appearance in Cleveland since 1993 when they were still playing in Los Angeles.
The Rams are 13-12-1 all-time against the Browns in the preseason, a series which started back in 1951. The teams played every preseason from 1953-1974, however, they have met just three times since.
The Browns are 3-1 in home preseason games against the Rams, including a 21-10 win over the Rams in that 1993 game when running back Randy Baldwin scored 2 touchdowns, the first on a 5-yard run in the third quarter and the second on a 100-yard kickoff return in the fourth.
The Browns come into the game at 1-0 after a 27-24 win over the Green Bay Packers last weekend, while the Rams are looking to even their record following a 28-7 home loss to the Minnesota Vikings.
“I am looking for us to play and operate better than we did against Green Bay,” said Browns coach Eric Mangini. “That’s what I typically look for each step in the preseason. Brown and White (Scrimmage) is one sort of bench mark and then you move to the first preseason, second, third game and the things we did well, I want to continue to do well and the things we didn’t do well I want to improve on.
“There was plenty to improve on from the game, a lot of things I was happy with,” he added. “There will be some different things that we try in this game just because it’s what we typically do in the second preseason game, some things we want to look at that maybe we’ll use some in the season, maybe more looking at it than anything else. That’s part of it as well.”
The Browns got off to a quick start in their preseason opener, marching 80 yards in 11 plays with Jerome Harrison scoring a 4-yard touchdown. On the drive, quarterback Jake Delhomme completed 6-of-7 passes for 66 yards.
After Sheldon Brown recovered a fumble that Ahtyba Rubin forced from Packers running back Ryan Grant, Seneca Wallace led the team to another touchdown by finding Brian Robiskie open in the back of the end zone. Wallace later hit tight end Benjamin Watson on the right seam for a 20-yard touchdown.
Tight end Alex Smith led all receivers with 3 catches for 37 yards, while Mohamed Massaquoi added 3 receptions for 36 yards. Running back Peyton Hillis caught 3 passes for 34 yards and Robiskie accounted for 3 receptions and 32 yards.
The Browns’ running game totaled 85 yards, with quarterback Colt McCoy and Jerome Harrison leading the way with 25 yards each.
Defensively, safety T.J. Ward and linebacker Marcus Benard led the way. Between his stops on special teams and defense, Ward totaled 9 tackles, while Benard registered a team-leading 8 defensive tackles and the team’s lone sack of the game. He also forced a fumble on the sack.
St. Louis allowed six sacks in their preseason opener, including four takedowns of No. 1 overall pick, Sam Bradford. When he was not getting sacked, Bradford completed 6-of-13 passes for 57 yards.
The Rams’ rushing attack was slowed by the absence of Steven Jackson, who has rushed for more than 1,000 yards in five of his first six NFL seasons. They managed just 33 yards on 13 running plays.
The Browns will be tested mightily by the Rams’ special teams unit. Donnie Jones launched 9 punts for an average of 45.3 yards and pinned the Vikings inside the 20-yard line on three occasions.
They will also have to be sound in tackling on punt coverage as second-year pro Danny Amendola had 3 returns, including a 93-yarder for a touchdown, against the Vikings.

Lookin forward to doin a little school work and watchin the game tonight. Only skimmed the article, is Colt out tonight? Mangini say how long they plan on leaving the starters in?

Compared to.....what? The Colts? Compared to last season it's like NIGHT and DAY. Delhomme and Wallace have looked much more precise than anything I saw from AnderQuinn last year. The defensive rookies look to be making some progress as well. Really that's ALL you can take from a preseason game, how the new players do. The 0-16 Lions went 4-0 in the preseason....the Colts have had one of the worst preseason records over the past several seasons. Need I say more?

Well when I posted that the offense had fumbled twice and the defense gave up a TD drive. I'd call that terrible. But yes after that Delhomme looked better and Seneca looked decent too. Both better than Quinn/DA.

Pretty happy with the defense last night...the offense didn't look that bad at times....looked really unprepared to start the game, then got going a little bit only to stall again with McCoy in the game. Hillis looked like a bowling ball out there at times....running backs looked good, makes me wonder what will happen when Hardesty enters the mix.......still looks lots better than last year!!!!

No reason to get overly concerned about last night's play. The conditions were awful and the makeshift nature of the right side of the OL put every QB in jeopardy. I'm just glad nobody got hurt.
It's going to be interesting to see what this defense looks like when it actually has some key members of the DL playing in a game. Right now, they aren't getting the consistent push up the middle I believe will happen when those players return. All of that is necessary to set up effective blitz schemes. Right now, most of the blitzing looks weak because there's no help along the line.
