For the second year in a row the Nationals were able to agree to a contract with the number one overall pick moments before the deadline.

Wondering what this one will be worth....

Reds signed their first round pick to a Major League deal. Meaning they have to drop someone from the 40 man roster...

Any news on Kyle Parker?

Edit: Just found that he did indeed sign with the Rockies. No sleep for Dabo tonight.

they said from the beginning that it would end up down to the wire, and sure enough it did.

^^^^

that's a big question for the Redlegs, espeically when (and if) they decide to bring up Chapman and Isringhausen

I hadn't heard that yet. Good news but obviously curious as to what that means.

It was just officially announced not that long ago, but a bunch of Reds "insiders"(I guess you could call them that) had been tweeting all evening about it. I have no idea who is going to be dropped though. Maybe Nix, but Dusty seems to love him.

Grandal hosed the Reds. It's great they signed him, but he got over slot money and a guaranteed 40-man slot.

It wouldn't be a big deal, but those who have followed the team know the 40-man slots on this team are TOUGH to come by.

They have so much quality, you are talking about cutting guys who are good players, and others will have to be waived to be moved off and I don't see any of them clearing waivers.

Danny Ray Herrera is an obvious choice to be removed, but they you are talking about possibly getting rid of guys like Del Rosario, Fisher or Burton, and those guys are quality pieces that a TON of other teams would claim if waived.

The good news is, Jason Isringhausen's return is probably over, so that's not going to threaten a 40-man spot, and at this point, Micah Owings is probably the next expendable one next to Herrera.

You have to figure that next year, Springer and Harang will be gone, but if Arrendondo can recover, he will definitely threaten for a bullpen spot, which makes it even tougher when you are talking about Burton, Del Rosario, Fisher, Arrendondo, LeCure, Owings and Maloney. It's likely that maybe 1 or 2 of those guys makes the team next year, and it will be tough to keep all on the 40-man.

I'd almost guarantee it's Daniel Ray Herrera that gets DFA'ed for Grandal to take the spot. Mesoraco just got promoted to AAA today, which is fantastic for him, and it sets up Grandal to start for Carolina at catcher. If not Herrera, it would be Springer who gets the boot considering he's on the DL and the Reds have so many RP options.

Looks like the Pirates might have signed both Jameson Taillion (sp) and Stetson Allie (top two picks; pitchers with first round talent with Allie dropping to the second round for whatever reason).

They're at least not afraid to throw money into developing players (and before anyone mentions how quick they trade people, guys like A. McCutchen, Tabata, Walker, Alvarez are signed through 2015...as long as they prove worthy of being in the mix, they won't be leaving soon...the quicker Doumit's gone the better, though...).

I was surprised Allie dropped to the second round, there was a lot of talk about him going pretty high in the first round. If the Pirates can keep them both healthy and develop them right, they could make a run at .500 sometime before 2020.

He throws 98 but battles with his control and emotions from time to time; plus I believe there were some questions about his conditioning level

Can they transfer Harang to the 60 day DL to make room for Grandal? His 60 days would be up just before Sept 1 so he could go on the playoff roster if they wanted to put him on it.

He could go on the 60-day DL retroactive to July 1st, but as you said, that would only temporarily make a spot open. However, it shouldn't be a big deal right now because they can easily open spots with Springer (if he isn't coming back) and possibly Owings (who is gone after this year) and Herrera (who likely won't be back). Valiquette is the only younger option that would probably clear waivers, but there would be no reason to risk losing him over Owings, Herrera or Springer.

If they decided that Harang is done as a Red, he could easily be removed, because he would likely either be claimed on waivers (and dealt) or he would clear and be removed and probably be shut down for the year. As of now, you have to factor Harang in the mix going forward because he could still be valuable, and they are paying him either way. If not, they could place Harang on the 60-day DL (to reserve his rights, although they won't pick up his option) and if it were to NOT be retroactive, and a date after August 1st, he would be ineligible for the post-season or to play at all the rest of the year. I'd say that the Harang camp, if this happened, would be complaining because he is already rehabbing, and barring a setback, it would be strange to DL him.

RHP Micah Owings has been designated for assignment by the Reds to make room for the newly signed Yasmani Grandal. Issue resolved.
