Big blow to the Braves pennant chase. Jones was the Braves hottest hitter over the past 2 weeks and has hit .307 since saying he wasn't talking about retirement any more in June. Brooks Conrad has proven to be a capable fill in but now will get his shot as an everyday player.

Most likely a career ender for him too, which is an unfortunate way for him to go out.

I think with the way he's played over the last two months and especially the last two weeks, he will come back. He has proven to himself he can still be productive and he won't want to leave the game like this. He is already under contract for next year and possibly 2012 if I recall correctly.

If this is a career-ender, it is truly a shame: Chipper OWNED the Mets during his career, and as a "character" in the game of baseball, I loved rooting against him. But I think I speak for all Mets fans in that we universally respect Chipper, what a gamer. He even named one of his kids Shea, which told me a lot about him, embracing the "Larry" chants at Shea and showing us that he had quite a bit of fun in those games too. Chipper was an old-school baseball player, and a damn good one. Hate to hear this.

That is bad news. I'm a big fan of Chipper, he grew up very close to me. One of my former co workers coached him in little league.

It will hurt for sure but Conrad has done pretty well in the limited time he has seen. Plus I think once Prado comes back from his broken finger, Omar Infante will see quite a bit of time at 3rd as well. He has been hot lately too and just needed to find a spot on the field. Having someone like him to plug in when the NL batting leader went on the DL is huge and the offense didn't really suffer too much with Infante in the lead off spot.

I wouldn't mind seeing Freddie Freeman getting called up. Glaus has had a couple key hits recently but is still a liability at first defensively because he can't move his feet. Sit him down for a little bit and let him get his legs completely healthy for September and also get Freeman some experience to see what he can do.

Chipper announced at a press conference he will undergo surgery tomorrow on his knee and will go through the rehab process as if he were trying to get ready for spring training. If the rehab goes well he will play next season.

Hate to see this happen to Chipper. As a Tribe fan I loved to hate him back when the Indians were contending and the Braves were as hot as they were in the 90's. But, as has already been stated, he is a great player and seems to be a great character guy.

Good to see Chippers replacement hit the game winning HR last night. Conrad is now hitting something like .297 with 7 HRs and 20 RBI after the 7th inning. He has largely been used as a pinch hitter or to occasionally give Chipper a day off. Those numbers include 2 game winning pinch hit grand slams.
