Today at the Pickerington North High School. Competition starts at 11 am. This is a great chace to see some serious Jiu-jitsu. No points. You MUST win by submission.

Actually going to support my team today. I will be competing in this next year. The guys in my divison will have a year or 2 more experience then me at this time.. This will give me some good exposure though.

Maybe I'll compete next year as well. What divisions are there?

Always wanted to get into grappling. Looks a lot like wrestling with submissions. I think my wrestling would translate well for this sport.

I train at Tama Martial Arts in Dayton. Officially I am a two stripe white, competition-wise I can hang and beat quite a few blues. Money issues have kept me from training as often as I would like. I will do both style in October. As far as weight, that's up in the air. I am mid 220s right now, have a fight September 3rd. I am also thinking of leaving immediately after the fight for Chicago for the NAGA Midwest championships if I can line up enough money to compete, pay for gas, and a hotel. Basically a couple weeks before OGC I will look at my weight and decide.

Yeah I am not an amazing BJJ practitioner. In the GI I am 3-0, won an EGO tournament two years ago. Went 0-1 at NAGA at the Arnolds in 2009 at experienced or intermediate in No-Gi in the unlimited weight class (back in my much chubbier days), now I am training BJJ 3 times a week, muay thai/boxing 3x a week and wrestle once or twice a week. I basically try to outwrestle and position people, definitely a top work guy in BJJ.

I've done no-gi BJJ for about a year and wreslted in HS for 2 years. I have been wanting to get into a NAGA or OGC event at sometime just to have some fun.

Jmog I am sure you will do well. I got to roll with a guy who got 3rd in state in wrestling. He was a lot bigger. and Damn much stronger. I was able to submit him with a nice rolling toe hold though. I am working all Gi. Sometime I will work on No Gi but I have enough trouble trying to learn Gi for now.

Oh I wasn't anywhere near state caliber wrestler. Wrestling in HS was something to do to stay in shape between football and baseball.

I was a state caliber baseball player (was all state) and was pretty good at football, but when it came to wrestling I was average at best. My senior year I nearly qualified for districts (got 5th at sectionals).

I just like grappling in general, wrestling, judo, BJJ you name it.

To be honest, my 7 year old son is already better (comparably) at wrestling than I ever was. He qualified for the OAC grade school states and would have placed had he not got hurt in his 3rd match (was winnint 5-0 when he got hurt and that kid ended up taking 8th).

He has seen me at some BJJ and judo practices/training sessions and he really wants to try those out as well. Who knows, between pee wee football and wrestling I might let him do some kids judo for awhile.

I hear you.. My son who is now 21.. Has been a better wrestler then I am since he was in the 10th grade. We have a 7th degree black belt in Judo who comes in every couple weeks to go over a judo throw. Also on Saturdays you can do either Judo or Jiu-jitsu.

We do have a purple belt who was an all american wrestler at Cornell U. Talk about good.

Combine a college wrestler with a few years of BJJ training (between purple and black belts) and you have one amazing grappler.

Its why you saw Matt Hughes choke out one of the better BJJ guys from Brazil in Almeida over the weekend.

All due respect to Hughes, as I am a huge Hughes fan, I think the main reason he got the submission was because Almeida was on queer street frm the straight right Hughes plkanted on him. Because no way should a BJJ black belt EVER be submitted by what was in essence a front headlock. He didn't try to drag out or pull guard or anything. Almeida was goooooooone.

That wasn't just a front headlock, it was a modified anaconda choke, he positioned his arms where he didn't have to rotate to get the leverage on the neck, he could use pure strength.

Actually Hughes said. just after the fight when Rogan was interfviewing him. that it was an old wrestling move. I watched it online so the video quaility was not great.

And "old wrestling move" which was basically a gator roll headlock hold but instead of rolling he arched up and squeezed to put pressure on the artery. It takes far more strength to choke out someone with that than the gator roll/anaconda choke, but its possible. You see how fast Almeida passed out once Hughes arched up on his toes? The blood was cut off completely, he passed out inside of 2 seconds.

I'm not a fan of Hughes the person, he seems like a douche bag, but I have always enjoyed him as a fighter.

I don't know how anyone can watch his fights against Carlos Newton, Frank Trigg (ball kick), or his 2nd fight against BJP and not be a fan of Hughes the fighter.

Yes I agree. You have to respect him as a fighter. I agree he is a douche as a person. The first fight against Carlos.. when Newton had the triangle.. And Hughes was Out.. and in the process of dropping him it KO'd Carlos. The look of suprise on Matt's face when he found out he won was pure shock. I think that was their first fight.
