Coca-Cola is being sued by a non-profit public interest group, on the grounds that the company's vitaminwater products make unwarranted health claims. No surprise there. But how do you think the company is defending itself?

In a staggering feat of twisted logic, lawyers for Coca-Cola are defending the lawsuit by asserting that "no consumer could reasonably be misled into thinking vitaminwater was a healthy beverage."
Now, honestly, I've known that Vitaminwater isn't exactly healthy. But reasonably, vitamin would sort of imply health benefits ... no?

There are definitely consumers out there that believe without a doubt that vitaminwater is a healthy beverage; part of it has to do with the name and the way it is marketed.

One 20 oz. bottle has 125 calories and 33g of sugar, or basically a little more than a can of Coke in both respects. Any joe schmoe out there drinking the stuff for health properties would be much better off reaching for plain water.

I think the author of the article is going out too far, it is a vitamin enfused water-based beverage that has a boatload of sugar in it. And it is reported (presumedly accurately) on the back label, which is why I've never bought the stuff.

If Coke made a Vitamin Coke and fortified with a few B vitamins, would that nanny complain about that?

-edit, forgot to mention that the plaintiff is the Center for Science in the Public Interest, I'd recommend people do research on this 'public service' group, they are a bunch of weirdos.

I knew it had calories, but I was always a big Gatorade drinker after workouts and recently switched to Vitamin Water due to it having fewer calories. Is it safe to say it is healthier than Gatorade, or wrong to even put it in the sports drink category?

I don't care if it's healthy or not. When I drink it (not often) it's because it tastes good. Same can be said for most beverages.

How is 20 oz and 125 calories worse or the same as Coke which is 140 calories for a can?

4 calories for each gram of sugar.....all drinks with calories are all sugar unless it is some sort of protein shake or milk drink


at 125 calories it should have 31.25 grams of sugar...not 33.....both are bad...but just saying

I drink "Revive" Vitamin Water when I am hungover. Placibo or not, it works for me!

On a tangent, I have never been a big Jennifer Anniston fan, but she looks pretty damn good in the new Smart Water ads:

gatorade/powerade is just as bad, unless you work out and burn 400 calories a day, there's no need to even think about drinking it (unless you simply like the taste), even orange juice is loaded with sugar. Even the best 'health' foods aren't healthy of you eat to much of them, which I'm sure the Center for Science in the Public Interest would attack if it was politically useful. They are the Westboro Baptist church of public interest groups.
