Lengthy article here.

Another interesting look at how the game has evolved over the years in pictures.

I can summarize the "story" in a few words:

A 2004 contract granting Electronic Arts (EA Sports) exclusive rights to NFL license from 2004-2012. That's how you build a dynasty, muscling everyone else out.

It was a pretty cool article to read. Pretty long though. And dlazz sure that's why it is still great now but it's not how it became the game it is today.

EA got that contract because they had already been forging their dominance over the previous 15 years. That contract just made them the only option. They were the best option long before that.

There is no doubt in my mind that Madden played a huge part in taking the NFL from where it was in the mid 80s to where it is today.

Midway had the NFL Blitz series, which was just as entertaining to play (IMO)

This. The best NFL game ever made wasn't even mad by EA, it was made by 2K sports. NFL 2K4 was an incredible game.

ive always thought that NFL 2k5 was the best football game ever made at that point. It was so much better than Madden 05.

good article, but i'm with dlazz and Crosby Show.

Madden might have been overtaken by NFL 2k, those games were making much more progress year to year than Madden has made in the last 3 years.

Yeah, and now that they have their monopoly, it seems like the Madden people have gotten lazier and lazier to the point where each new games is new rosters plus 1-2 gameplay tweaks.

ESPN NFL 2K5 is the best football game I've ever played outside of Tecmo Super Bowl. I still play it on occasion.
