It appears that my wife and I will be crossing the Indy 500 off the bucket list next May. Tickets are arranged, but I would love to hear from the race veterans regarding lodging. While money is certainly a consideration, I'm somewhat willing to pay for the convenience of being resonably close. All suggestions and off-topic smartass remarks are appreciated as usual.

Not being a smartass...but seriously, save your money. One of the worst tracks to go to.

Not much as far as lodging close to the track that I'm aware of... pretty much right in the middle of an urban neighborhood. Be sure to go in the infield before the race and watch the cars coming out of gasoline alley and hit up the museum while you're there.
