I'm getting ready to haggle with a used car salesman. . . any tips?

Don't be afraid to actually get up and walk away from the table a few times. When I was buying my car, I did it a few times and the guy was basically chasing me down to get me back to work out a deal.
And don't be afraid to actually leave the dealership altogether. If the guy is pressed to get a sale, he'll be calling you by the time the week is out to get it done.

Fixed. Make sure you have a gun on you and make sure he sees it. If he doesnt give you the car for whatever price you want to pay, tell him you want to check out one of the cars in the very back of the lot(where the real haggling happens, for his life). Find out from kelley Blue Book or one of those sites how much they probably paid for the car. I was looking at trading in my 2005 Town & Country over the weekend and was offered $6000 for a trade, but the dealership was seeling two from the same year with a lot less options than mine has for over $11k. If you know they have that much of a mark-up you know that they can come down a lot and still make money on the deal. Definately don't be afraid to walk away. I left Saturday and already had a message on my machine today that they may be able to work out a deal.

Have a limit, and don't go over that limit. Also...haggle the price of the vehicle, not the payments (if you're making payments).

When it comes to used cars, if you don't get up and leave once, you aren't getting the best deal. I mean get up and leave the dealership altogether.
When we bought my wife's minivan a few years back, my wife was pissed when we got up and left because I wasn't getting the deal I wanted.
She was calling my praises the next day when they called us back and gave us exactly what I was asking for.

When you pick out a car, ask the salesman what the lowest price he can give you is. Usually they'll be honest and give you their lowest price if you just straight up ask them. Also, when they ask you what you're looking for your monthly payments to be, don't tell them. If you only want to pay $150 a month they will still put you in a $30,000 car with a 10 year loan.

From watching commercials, my best advice is to tell the salesman to show you the Car Fax. After you do this, odds are the guy will start acting really nervous and pretend he either didn't hear you or that he misunderstood your request. Don't be fooled by this smokescreen. Keep asking for the Car Fax. If you feel things aren't going well with this request, kick him in the jimmy. I guess that last part isn't in any of the commercials, but I feel it still is a potent negotiation tactic.

Show up completely hammered. The guy will be so tempted to get your belligerent ass off of the lot that he'll sell at the lowest price just to get you the hell away from the other potential customers.

...or even better don't use a payment plan at all.
I agree with the first part. Don't go in and look for a "deal". Find a car you want and determine it's value to you not to the dealer or the general public. Tell the salesman that's what you will pay for it. He is either willing or not willing to take that value for it. There is no haggling.
I make it clear to the salesman that he has one time to answer me and it's the first time. If he chooses to later agree to the value I presentedby calling me or following me out of the building I won't even listen because he's already expressed the car was worth more to him by turning down my first offer.
It's one offer and one answer. I tell them that in advance. If the answer is no. I wish them luck with their efforts and move on.
I have never found a car I had to have so bad that I needed to work hard to come to an agreement with someone on it's value.
There's lots of dealerships out there and lots of cars.
