So long story short, I'm bored with where I work and live. Luckily I work for an organization that has locations in Cincy & Columbus where I could pretty easily get a job within' the organization when the right one comes along. I want to start doing some legwork, so I will be ready to hit the ground running when the opportunity arises. Basically I'm looking for some good, young neigborhoods around Cincy and C-bus! Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Vine Street. Close to the Cincy Zoo.

Columbus is the hustle spot.

Cincinnati sucks unless you're conservative or racist. (Redundant, I know).

What kind of price range are you looking for either to rent or buy?

Would like to stay around $500 to rent a place, wouldn't want to buy right now. Could pay over $500 for the right place.

James Road....right there where DFAS is. Preferably no more than 20 minutes, but prefer a nice area over a short commute.

You'll have a hard time renting in a nicer area for $500 and still be close to the zoo unless you can find some roommates. My wife rented a house with a Xavier student when she first moved back to Cincinnati and she paid right around $500-600 in Oakley which is a nice area and close enough to the zoo. Probably right around a 20 minute drive with traffic.

As for Columbus, working out East, Easton is a cool place that is surrounded by some sketchy neighborhoods. As for being centrally located, German Village, Victorian Village, Short North and Grandview are all great areas close to the bars and entertainment. However, of the places mentioned, you will be hard pressed to find something at $500 a month.

German Village has some older buildings so you might be able to find a dump of an apartment that rents cheap in a good area. Grandview rents will run around $700+ for a one bedroom.

As for Easton, it is surrounded by sketchy areas so you could find something really reasonable but you might want to be careful.

all those areas are going to be tough at that price point. you could probably find something in clintonville for around that number. it's a fairly young and happening area, but it's going to be pushing the 20 minute commute.

$500 will be tough in either place without roomates......or roach spray...one or the other

you could definately find one of of those purple houses near the zoo for $500 a month

Sadly, it's hard to find a decent place in a little city in southern Ohio for $500 anymore.....unless my grandma is renting them...she goes $300 and $350 which is insanely cheap compared to others.

good luck

Well, when I say $500, that's what i'd like to pay. I can pay up to $800 or so. The nice area is much more important than the commute. A half hour commute is fine with me.

For Columbus, I'd look closely at Grandview/Fifth by Northwest area - roughly west of SR 315 and south of Lane Ave until it morphs into the southern part of Upper Arlington. It would be a 20-minute commute to the office down I-670, and there is a wide variety of rental housing available in a safe area.

It's definitely a younger area of town - lots of graduate students, and "first job out of college" residents., but you're not completely overwhelmed by students as you would be east of the Olentangy River. The ratio of attractive single women is right up there, too!

There is literally nowhere in Cincinnati for by yourself at that price. My house at Xavier in the ghetto trash of norwood is $650.

For the area you described I'd look into some of the housing for UC students. That practically is UC and there are some decent places and that would meet the young people requirement.

I've found some decently priced apartments in Hyde Park.

They are probably pretty shitty or incredibly small for that price. Are you just looking for a 1 bed apt, any other requirements? How would you feel about living in northern kentucky right across the river? That might be your best option to be in a young neighborhood, maybe renting out a condo near the river.

Yea, just a 1-bed apt. is fine with me. The less I have to maintain the better. I wouldn't mind being across the river in Covington or somewhere.

The area is great, it's where I live, but dave is right. They are likely tiny little apartments.

What streets were the apartments on? Were they in a large complex or in a "quad"?

Really, anything in the Hyde Park area is going to put you in a nice area. It's also a quick drive to the zoo. If you don't mind the smaller apartment then I would highly recommend this area.

Justin can help you on this more than I can, but many places near Hyde Park will put that on the location when it's actually in Oakley or other surrounding areas. You won't be within walking distance to the fun areas in Hyde Park, and parking sucks ass there. Just be careful when looking, I'm not sure if they are bad areas or anything though, Oakley is fine.

I lived in an apartment in Oakley with a buddy of mine. It was very reasonably priced, and nice and clean. I lived in the 2 bedroom, but the 1 bedrooms weren't terribly small. The 1 bedrooms are only $495/month.

The main property website is:

The apartment name is Romaine Court.

Yeah, Oakley is definitely a nice area as well.
