So last night, I was channel surfing between 3 movies...now bear with me.

Close encounters of the Third Kind, 2001: A Space Odyssey and Glory.

I wanted to check out certain parts of each one. I'll start with 2001: I saw this movie when I was about 20. Thought it was stupid then and wanted to check out the beginning. Wow! Seems so corny today with the special effects. I wanted to relive the scenes at the beginning when it ends with the chimp throwing the bone in the air and it turns into a spacecraft. IMO, the whole beginning was stupid. But I probably missed something.

Next I wanted to watch the end of Close Encounters to see if I still thought it was cool. Corny!....how those people ended up at Devil's Top and all those jerks running around like chickens with their heads cut off and the constant shots of people in "awe".

Next we have "Glory". I still found some flaws, but this movie is a Classic, IMO, in spite of it. Can't stand when Denzil gets whipped and was saved from it by watching the end of Close Encounters. I knew what happened at the end, so I turned it off and went to bed.

I love the scene leading up to the final charge on the beach. Thank you for reading. Discuss.

Oh crap! I just set a personal record for going more than an hour without a response to a thread that I started. Please take it easy on me with the "this thread sucks" comments, because I really did want some feedback (and it helps me get off the LBJ fiasco stuff!). Just wait till my 50 and Over Club brothers get back from dinner! Then this thread will take off. Of course, they might head straight to bed for their "Gator Ade...Geritol....or Depends"....right, GoChiefs...who is probably the funniest man on here, even over berry!

I'm not going to say that this thread sucks, but I'll give you some advice.

1. You don't need to hit the enter key throughout your post to truncate lines unnecessarily. Everyone's computer will do that for them to make it fit appropriately on their screen.

2. Paragraphs are your friend. I tried reading your original post but couldn't get through it since it should probably be at least four different paragraphs.

Just some friendly advice, take it or leave it.

I hear ya, krambman, I believe in paragraphs, too, and thus the "bear with me". But I have been making all my posts from my "crackberry" lately and it simply won't let me do it. I am bummed because what you said is right and I apologize for that. Now make a comment on the movies.

I'm only 29, so the Encounters were way before my time. I tried to sit down and watch them, but they looked to damn corny. OK, since I'm moving to the next movie, I'll go ahead and start a new paragraph.

The only one I've watched was Glory, which was a good movie. We watched it in school, and I really don't remember a whole lot about it now. Lol But I do remember enjoying it.

The whipping scene was a very powerful part of the story. Matthew Broderick's character, a progressive abolitionist, finds himself being no different than the slave owning masters his troops had just left behind. It is a point one could write a whole book about regarding the complicated dynamic of race relations including those of well intentioned whites and blacks.

However...
If I ever see Drew Barrymore in real life I will ask her out to dinner... with my wonderful Angel by my side of coarse. It would be cool to hear some of her stories.

2001 puts me to sleep every time I have ever started to watch it... yawn... give me a Planet of the Apes movie over that one every time.

Haven't seen Glory, but I'm sure I will some day. That thing is like 5 hours long isn't it?

Drew was not in Close Encounters. You are thinking of that other Spielberg space movie that came out five years later, "ET". smh....

I never have been a fan of futuristic, space themed shows. As of age 48 I still have not seen Star Wars, ET, Star Trek, Close Encounters, 2001, etc... I see how people can appreciate it and enjoy it, but it is not for me.

I remember going to see predator with Arnold when it came out, some buddies said lets go see it. I did not know anything about it and was so pissed when all the special fx creatures were in it... I wanted to exit stage left and actually fell asleep in it. Give me a bad western any day over the best of science fiction. JMO
