So I've never been to the northern outer banks and since i'm in norfolk, va for a few more weekends I want to spend couple days there. So what is there to do in the Kitty Hawk, Kill Devils, and Nags Head area?

Also any advice of a cheap place to stay would be great too.

Outer Banks is a collection of desolate beaches, with massive dunes, and some quaint attractions. It is a nice getaway for someone wanting to truly get away.
Not my cup of tea, I usually hit some of the beach towns like Holden, Carolina, or better yet Wilmington and Morehead City beach. OBX is nice though, a good time can definitely be had.

Stay away from Corolla, made the mistake of going there last year. I do wanna go back and check out some of the other areas.

If you want to see wild horses, consider camping out on Shackleford Island. It is a national wildlife refuge, and is a great place to camp for the evening. Also, the sea shells there are the size of your head.

ytowngirl,

I've been there every year of my life since I was born. Definitely go to one of the lighthouses if you've never been to the top of one. They are stunningly beautiful and very majestic. Currituck Beach Light and Cape Hatteras are the only two I know of that are open to the public, and both are virtually identical in structure, with the Currituck Light being plain brick in color and shorter, and the Hatteras Light being the iconic black and white candy cane striped, as well as the tallest in the US. The Wright Brothers memorial is pretty cool if you're into it.

One thing.....don't go there expecting to party and have a good time. As has been said, its mostly some quaint vacation communities that are meant for relaxation more than partying. Lots of great little shops with knick knacks.

I'm actually leaving for OBX on friday, will be there for a week. Actually I think I'm staying overnight in the Norfolk/Hampton Roads area.

I second this. Why in God's name do I give a damn where you went on your vacation. Its not like its an exclusive part of the country.

Ya, as if EVERY OTHER bumper sticker you care about, but god....when its a vacation spot! Lookout! Why would anyone give a damn?!

People are representing a place that they love. The same way you'd represent you're from Ohio, or you cheer for a certain pro or college team. It could be a tshirt, a bumper sticker, a sign out in the lawn, a *GASP* AVATAR ON A WEBSITE! (I mean, seriously why in God's name do I give a damn what team you like/don't like?!)

People like me love the Outer Banks, its part of who I am, and no I don't have one on my car but I see no problem with it.

It's cool to drive down the beach and see the horses exactly ONE time, then it turns into a huge pain in the ass!! There's pretty much nothin' in the town of Corolla. We stayed on the beach about 5 miles down the sand, it took half an hour to traverse that 5 miles. The tide dictates when you can go to town and how long you can stay there. It's just not relaxing as far as vacations go.

You can't drive on the beach in Corolla. Unless you're talking about Corova Beach, which is 4-wheel drive only.....

ytown, don't know where I'm staying in Norfolk......my mom booked everything, and I'm not even driving.

I want to say 10 years ago we were there. The beach was a little gritty (not smooth like Myrtle), and the waves were a little more aggressive. Also the water was cooler. However, goods would be the traffic is less and the beaches are much less crowded.

We did the Wright Brothers Museum, which would be like an hour of less, and they are correct about the serious dunes. One thing that was big there was kite flying. Serious kite flying. Way up high. Professional Wright Brothers stuff.

we usually stay a little futher south on Hatteras Isl., although we have stayed everywhere from Ocracoke to Corolla at one point or another....

it doesn't have all the amenities or excitement or golf of Myrtle or Hilton Head...but that is exactly what we like about it.

quiet morning on the deck, little run on the beach, swim around noon, then some lunch...take a nap in the hammock...take a little drive and see the sites, some crablegs for supper, fly a kite at dusk, chase the crabs with a flashlight at nite to make the kids scream...........the absolute best. Enjoy it!

My aunt and uncle used to own a house in Nags Head. 1/4 mile from beach. Was OK. I'd rather have a place on the water. Not on the beach. On the water.
