I'm going down with my gf the first week of Aug. and planned on playing at least a couple rounds. I've googled plenty of courses but wouldn't mind some personal insight if anyone had any.

North Shore is RIGHT off of the island, immediately across the High Rise bridge. Easily the best course in the immediate area.
Just watch out for random alligators what wander over from the Intercoastal and the swamp between the water and the course.

I never actually golfed there, but I have family a couple miles from the course so I've been down around the area plenty.

My dad has golfed at Topsail Greens, which is inland on 17 between the island and Hampstead, it's just your run of the mill public course. He didn't think it was worth it.

I don't know about the ones toward Hampstead (Belvedere, Olde Point)

Thanks brother. Olde Point looked cool. And for $35 you can't really go wrong.
