I just got a text from ESPN saying that the AP is reporting that a source close to the family is saying that Yankees owner George Steinbrenner passed away this morning.

Tough week for the Yankees organization....

Steinbrenner was a hell of an owner, you have to admit that whether you loved or hated the Yankees. RIP George.

I hated the Evil Empire because of what George made them, the best!! He wanted to buy the Indians in the early 70's but it didn't happen and he bought the Yanks, another Cleveland blunder of course! RIP George, he is what I want in an owner of the franchises I root for!

Exactly. Whether you love the Yankees or you hate them, you have to respect the fact that winning was all that mattered to George. There are several billionaire owners in sports and George isn't one of them, yet he spent more money every year than anyone else with one singular goal in mind: winning. Most owners would like to win but they're more concerned about making money. With George it was all about winning no matter the monetary cost and he figured that if he won then the money would take care of itself.

Somewhere, right now, George is sitting back with a giant calzone from Paisanos and sharing a beer with Bob Sheppard, getting ready to watch tonight's All-Star game. RIP George!

He was a winner. Whether we agreed with George's tactics or not is irrelevant on this sad day for the Yankees and their many fans. I would simply echo the sentiments of many others who will visit this site for the next few days, by saying... Rest in Peace Mr. Steinbrenner, you have definitely earned it. Also we should remember Bob Sheppard for the years of service at the Yankee microphone. I loved BigAppleBuckeye's visualization of George and Bob sharing a Calzone and a beer while watching the All-Star Game tonight. Good Stuff!
