Actually, ask her why she likes Nickelback. I bet she won't be able to answer with something relating to good songwriting at all (IE she's not going to say their interesting chord composition, creative solos, or meaningful lyrics).
And there's the classic music snobbery comment. Dude, some people just like to hear a song that has a good rhythm and catchy chorus. Not everyone needs a song to encapsulate the meaning of life. There are very, very few songs I "identify" with or that "speak to me". I just want to hear a song that I enjoy listening to. I know a good song when I hear it. It may not meet a technician's criteria of a "good song", but by definition popular music is. in fact, good music because it is so subjective. When you are talking about chorus composition and meaningful lyrics and the like, you are defining criteria that not everyone shares or requires. If I want a moving/emotional experience, I'll go listen to a good aria.
