Gallipolis, Eastern cagers engage in scrimmage

Gallipolis and Meigs Eastern cagers scrimmaged for two hours Saturday morning in the new Gallia Academy High School gym at Centenary.

GAHS Coach Jim Osborne played 15 or 16 prospects during the seven 10-minute sessions while Eastern Coach Howie Caldwell also used several players and combinations. Gallipolis junior guard Austin Wilson is still out of hardwood action due to a football injury.

Initial GAHS starters Saturday were were Jordan Cornwell, Ethan Moore, John Troester Jared Golden and Chuck Calvert. Second round Blue Devil starters were Bryce Amos, Nick Mitchell, Jared Golden, John Troester and Cory Eberhard.

Observe used several combinations from the above list during the five remaining quarters, including Nate Allison, Tyler Eastman, Ben Robinson, Nate Gordon and Cody Billings.

In the first varsity outing, GAHS edged Eastern, 13-12. The Blue Devils lost the second round, 9-7 and the third round, 10-9. The two teams tied in the fourth round, 8-8 and tied again in the fifth outing, 4-4. Eastern won the sixth round, 11-3. The two teams then played another round in the auxiliary gym, working against zone and man-to-man defenses

Tom Moore’s GAHS reserves battled Eastern’s reserves in the auxiliary gym. The Blue Imps showed improvement during their practice games, and won the finale on the varsity court, 12-7.

The GAHS froshof Coach Greg Atkins scrimmaged the Ohio Valley Christian Defenders varsity squad in the First Baptist Church gym, winning three and losing three outings. OVCS won the first match, 10-4. GAHS won the second and third matches, 10-4, and 8-5. The Defenders then won 13-11 and 12-9 decisions before GAHS won the finale, 15-9.

Gallia Academy’s third pre-season contest is Tuesday, Nov. 24, at home against defending state champion Oak Hill. It’s the second annual Foundation contest.

The girls’ game will begin at 6 p.m., followed by the boys’ game. Proceeds from these contests will go towards Holzer Center’s “Fight Against Cancer” and Jane Hatfield for “Athletes in Action.”

The final pre-season battle will be held on Saturday, Nov. 28, against Washington CH and Waverly, starting at 9 a.m., on the new Blue Devil hardwood.

GAHS will open its 2009-10 campaign on Saturday, Dec. 5, at home against non-league Rock Hill, followed by a home game against non-league River Valley on Tuesday, Dec. 8. First away game is Saturday, Dec. 12, at Athens.

Most of the GAHS games will be triple-headers this year with the freshmen playing first at 5:30 p.m.

GAHS Athletic Director Bill Wamsley announced new reserve seat sales last week.

The new Blue Devil gym will seat 1,800 fans, and if necessary, will hold around 2,000 if the indoor track is needed for a standing room only crowd.
