I am guessing that he didn't have to take that big pay cut....that is the only reason he was holding off.

Good for him. I question his coaching, however...since every team he's coached has been loaded with superstars. (ib4 OMG HOW CAN YOU SAY THAT)

Yeah Phil has coached a bunch of superstars, but it's not easy to manage egos. I personally think Pat Riley is one of the most overrated coaches in NBA history.

At least Phil coached them all along. Riley's last title with the Heat was swooping in and stealing the team midseason so he could take the credit for it.

I say that the biggest job a head coach in the NBA has is managing egos. It is not like high school...these coaches are not x's and o's guys. They have 10 assistants for that.

Yeah, last stand until the potentially win it next year and he has to stay to go for the first 4 peat of his career. Phil is the NBA's version of Brett Favre.

Phil can't hold a candle to that attention whore down in Mississippi.

Phil was honest the whole way through. He said he's considering it, give him a couple weeks. And by god, he had an answer in a couple of weeks.

I sure as hell am not going to bet against him next year.

It is hard to wrap your head around someone going for their FOURTH 3-peat.

Then he will have 6 titles with Michael, 6 with Kobe, and a pair of 3 peats with each.

How does he walk away from a chance at being the tie-breaker getting Kobe a 7th ring and Phil's first 4-peat. I just don't see how he walks away until someone dethrones them, whenever it may be.

Exactly. And don't be surprised to see the old grease ball on the bench if the Heat land Wade and another free agent.

Exactly! Everyone talk about what Pat did with the Lakers, but that crew already had a championship before he was name head coach. Then the Heat became bad under him, so he quits. When they get good again he wants to take over for the championship. Then they got worse each season after winning the title and he quits again. I could never understand why people hype him up so much.

So who is a good coach? Championships are championships and there are two coaches in the history of the game who have more titles than Riley. Every other coach who won titles had good/great players. Some coaches had great players and never won shit. Nothing is automatic and the fact that only one guy during Riley's tenure had more titles than him means he did something right. If it isn't about titles at that level, then what is it about?

This is an NCAA basketball coach, but I think Brad Stevens from Butler is a great coach. He took a fairly mediocre roster of players to the NC game.
