Ah, the Ruskies are still at it. 10 people were arrested today for allegedly spying on the U.S. for the Russians.

Still, it is not a surprise to see other countries continuing to use spies against the U.S. Even allies spy on each other (UK, Israel, France all in the U.S.)
But, good to see our FBI caught them and limited the damage.
This could be a huge, depending on the access the 8/10 had.
I have no idea if the individuals worked in the U.S. government or if they were private sector.Eight individuals were arrested Sunday for allegedly carrying out long-term, "deep-cover" assignments in the United States on behalf of the Russian Federation, the Justice Department announced today. Two additional defendants were also arrested Sunday for allegedly participating in the same Russian intelligence program within the United States.
In total, 11 defendants, including the 10 arrested, are charged in two separate criminal complaints with conspiring to act as unlawful agents of the Russian Federation within the United States. Federal law prohibits individuals from acting as agents of foreign governments within the United States without prior notification to the U.S. Attorney General. Nine of the defendants are also charged with conspiracy to commit money laundering.

Ten Russian pies busted?! I know this goes on all the time, but doesn't this seem like a rather huge number?
My opinion: Russia is not and will not be a friend to the United States anytime soon. That Putin follow is a shady cat.

This. The Russians would have no reason to spy on us if he would not have pushed that crazy missile defense system.ccrunner609;405087 wrote:Damn George Bush.

The Russians know quite well how to get horny American males to sell out their country. I remember during the Cold War they used to send some of those fine Russian ladies over to the US embassy. Embassy guard sells his country out for a piece of ass.Bigdogg;405007 wrote:Here is one of them. Anna Chapmen, She may have been very persuasive.

But wait, but wait. Obama is arm in arm with the Ruskies....why they even agreed to arms reduction, and we are supposed to believe what the reports and "independent" agencies tell us.

Everything on Earth is America's fault (or at least Bush's fault) so how can you blame BHO for playing footsie with Ivan? Gotta mend fences ya know.Mr. 300;405500 wrote:But wait, but wait. But on the other hand nothing is America's fault. The rest of the world are just too big of pussies or evil bastards to accept that what we do is always right and the best.

Couple observations.
The Russians are insanely good at spying. It is written in their DNA. The fact that this program was developed at the end of the Yelstin and start of Putin years is not a surprise. The Russians are very good at the typical spy techniques. The problem was, by 2010, there was simply no need for them, or they were not obtaining any real information that simple google searches or me heading down to the local DC bar would pick up.
I highly doubt this changes the strategic relationship between the two countries. These agents were not moles in the government, no government secrets were obtained, and as far as we know they did not really influence anyone. The Russians simply got caught with their hand in the jar. Ames and Hansen were much worse than these guys, and those two didn't hurt relations.
Also, countries still spy on each other. Even with all the technology, human intelligence is still the best. (But, not in this circumstance). I'm not defending the actions, just saying it happens in this world. We have spies all over the globe, so do the Brits, Chinese (many here in fact) and Israelis.
I guess to me, the story is more fascinating than anything else.

Looks like we have a good old fashioned Cold War like spy swap underway.
