After the USA game, this is the game I am most looking forward to, just ahead of England vs Germany.
I think Portugal may have hurt themselves by playing so passive versus Brazil and Ivory Coast. They only chased the game versus the woeful North Korea and Im not sure they will be able to turn it on at this point. Spain is the toughest team in the world to find your groove against, I have been thoroughly disappointing by how they have played versus the 2 teams with talent so far as well as how poor they were in qualifying.

haha, mine has purpose. I thought about letting the other thread ride for a few more rounds, but the discussion was going in so many different directions at times that it seemed smart to have a thread dedicated to each game. If not, well they will fade into the depths of the second page and no one will care.

20 minutes till kickoff. This game COULD be amazing, but I have a feeling Portugal is gonna sit back (ala the group game versus Brasil) in a bunker and hope for counters. Either way, the talent on the field is pretty astounding for a round of 16 match-up.

I honestly don't know how to pick this game..
I could see Spain coming out quick and going up or I could see Spain making a mistake and Portugal countering it, then sitting back....
I honestly don't know who'll win.

^^^I honestly think if Portugal sits back they will lose, even if they do spring an early goal to go up 1. Spain isnt gonna get shut-out the rest of the tourney, imo. They are too creative all over the pitch, and especially creative and unpredictable around the 18. I think they will manage to scroe at least one versus Portugal even if they sit back and defend the whole time.

Regardless of what happens, I don't think anybody's getting by Brazil this year. Other than the first part of the North Korea game, Brazil has exerted their will against all-comers.

I agree about Brazil, which is why I circled them in as champs before the World Cup started.

Not that they (or Portugal for that matter) needed it....but they didnt look good versus Portugal. They beat up on Ivory Coast pretty good and then got to play Chile. Lets see what they do against another team with their talent in the Netherlands. Right now, they have played to a draw, and 2 good games to go along with a crap game against a team that gave up 12 goals in their next 2 games. Brazil is very good, but if your going to annoint anyone at this point I dont see how it can be anyone but Argentina.

0-0 at the half. Portugal has created some good chances of the counter. As we thought, Spain is possessing and Portugal is looking for the counter. Although, when they do counter they are bringing more forward than I thought they would.

Xavi is by far the best passer in soccer. Arguably the best mid, but I wont go that far. But best distributor and controller of the game, is his. That was a great pass to Villa, who of course finishes.
This is the type of game that makes Spain so dangerous. They are so creative with their quick passes and 1-2's that they are almost impossible to shut out for 90 minutes.

Spain is quite the team, and they have the chemistry to win it. Their passes are so precise and the team works together very well.
Now, I don't know the if announcers were speaking about this after the goal today, as I had music playing, but from what I saw, not that it makes a difference now, Villa was offside when he scored the goal.

It was close, but he was level.
