they also arent afraid to shoot from outside the 18 and score. we have this fear of shooting outside the box. we feel the need to dribble the ball into the goal.

Ha. A bit of a hole? I know he's from the U.S. but that announcer is dreaming. We're fucked.

How can the defense breakdown so much? Demerit and Oneywu are always out of position. Torres and Bradley have not come back to help at all.

And some stupid need to get assists. It must be our basketball influence. No one will take the open shot, they always have to make another pass.

I'm no soccer expert, but how can the US go from like five scoring chances to all of a sudden being down 0-2? And it seems like the U.S. cannot maintain possession.
This is epic fail on a whole nother level.

I bet the English are loving this. Just proves that without their terrible goalie, we would have had no chance of beating England.

I'm confused...Yahoo sports doesn't say the game is over.

Now I know little about soccer, and I'm only paying attention because I like the international competition...so excuse me if I'm coming across as ignorant.

But...

...if there is still a while to play...why is everyone freaking out?

Because the U.S. has NEVER come back to win a game from behind. They've tied 3 times, but I doubt we'll score 2 goals, not mentioning the fact we'll probably give up another 1 or 2 in the second half. The last team to come from 2 - 0 behind and win was in 2006. It's not going to happen.

It's hard to score in soccer, #1, but more importantly, it becomes exponentially more difficult to score when a team is playing all-out defense, as I expect Slovenia to do in the second half.

because Slovenia is just kicking out ass. beating us to the ball and just out hustling us. we played maybe 5 good minutes.

US defense has sucked every minute of this World Cup so far.
Our only goal so far is because the England goalie gave it to us.

Combine that with a 0-2 hole, it's not exactly something to get excited about.

Not to mention the Slovs will just bunker down now they are up 2, I wouldn't be surprised to see 9 or 10 back anytime we get on their side of the field.

Down two goals is huge in soccer. usually the second goal is considered "insurance". Slovenia doesn't even need to be on the attack during the second half, just play defense and the match is over.

Because 2-0 would be roughly the same as being down 28-0 at halftime of a football game, or down 20 (or more) in hoops?

I can't really figure out why Findley is in there. He chases down balls, creates opportunities and does jack shit with them. Grow some balls and take one of the three open looks that you have had in this game. Get Buddle in there now. To even stay alive in the group we need to get 2 goals off a squad that conceded 4 in the whole of qualification, thats fucking spectacular.

^^ What everyone else said plus the fact that outside of a mistake in the England game the last U.S. goal in the World Cup was 2002

I'm gchatting with my English friend, he is a little ticked that the U.S. defense wasn't this bad during their game. But, he is a little shocked that the U.S. is playing this bad.

Again, I know little about soccer...but come on guys.

Maybe a longshot...but don't get your panties in a ruffle quite yet.

http://www.soccerphile.com/soccerphile/news/comebacks.html
History was made on May 25th 2005 in Istanbul, when Liverpool wiped out Milan's three goal advantage in the space of only six minutes.
If the USA is really as good as everyone who voted for them in the poll says they are....it's not THAT big of a far cry.

Help me out ... assuming we lose today, basically our only chance to advance would be:

*England loses to Algeria
*We beat Algeria
*England loses to Slovenia

Correct? I think that would give Slovenia 9 points, the U.S. 4 points, Algeria 3 points and England 1 point ... unlikely, but possible, no?

Now we have to hope Algeria beats England today and then England lose their last game, plus we have to beat Algeria in our final to advance. I'd give it a 0.00000005% chance of happening. England aren't going to lose two in a row. Good bye WC, from the U.S.
