Is anyone really surprised by this?

Watch the video attached to the story. These parents are freaking nuts!! Last week I saw this story and turned to my wife and said 'she's not going to make it'...

Prayers for the family

Gonna be honest... I don't feel bad for people when they do stupid things. No reason for someone to try to sail around the world alone, especially a kid.

... I also hope she's ok, but any fucking parents who let their 16 year old daughter do this should be fucking hung!

I wanted to say this, but was afraid people wouldn't take it well.

what is the point of a support crew if they are not even remotely close by? the closest ship is 400 miles away. the rescue boats are 2 days away. who the fuck plans this shit?

Another +1000000. Sounds like a bunch of rich stupid adults without any common sense at all.

Her brother held the world record for being the youngest person to make it around the world by boat. Then some 16-year-old chick from Australia broke that record. And now, in her attempt to break it, she possibly will get in the record books as "Youngest person to fuck up sailing around the world solo, becoming fish food in the process".

Probably not the greatest consolation prize, but that's the price of stupidity. Shit, when I was 16, my parents didn't even trust me with the family car without supervision (my mom cracked me up...you could tell she SO desperately wanted the same passenger seat brakes that Driver's Ed cars have)...allowing a kid that age to solo sail around the world is just insanity.
