Would you do it? I am heating up my job search since I will be graduating in August. I saw a posting on LinkedIn that refers you to apply via the company web site but I was able to see who posted the job on LinkedIn. The lady is a recruiting manager at the company. Do you think applying on the website and then sending inMail (the sites version of e-mail) to the recruiter to introduce myself would be a bad thing?
Not sure what I would say so if anybody has done it and has an example of what you said please pass it along.

Treat it like you would an e-mail or any other type of formal contact. Spell and grammar check it.

I don't know what type of job it is but you could, in the course of your email, ask if there is anything you could do to make yourself more attractive for the position.

I would avoid using the winking smiley face after "attractive" or "position".
Make sure your Linked in is touched up and professional if you are going to use it for a potential job contact. Also, obviously make sure any other Social Sites are appropriate/don't have them.

I would absolutely contact her. Worst case scenario is she sends you the link to the job page, best case scenario is she looks at your linkin profile and remembers your name and that gives you a heads up.

To echo the above, yes--contact her. But spell check/proofread your e-mail. Have a friend look over it to confirm. You don't want to take the initiative to contact her and then screw yourself with something stupid.
I'd write something along the lines of:

I am interested in a full time position with [company]. I will graduate from [school] in [date] with a degree in [major, possibly GPA here as well]. I am interested in [company] because of [xyz reasons], and I believe I will be a good fit because [unique thing about me]. In addition to my LinkedIn profile, I am happy to send a complete resume and references. You can contact me via e-mail at [address] or by phone at [phone--as an aside, check your voicemail message and make sure it's work appropriate].
Thank you for your time and consideration.
