The other thread about recent college grads got me thinking about my girlfriend and her job search. She graduated last year from Kent State University with a major in Sport Administration. Her ideal/dream job is to work with children, developing programs to keep them active with sports and other activities, and to help reduce the epidemic of childhood obesity. I immediately thought of a YMCA-type role, but most those positions are volunteer-only, or temporary.

However, she would work at almost any entry-level, full-time job from sport marketing to public relations to facility management, etc. She has had job experience working with Kent State baseball and football programs for game day operations, as well as an intership at a prison developing activity programs for the inmates. She's great with kids and works currently as a nanny for a few families until she can find a full-time job in her field.

So, if anyone in the area of the Cleveland-Canton-Mansfield triangle (or wider) knows of any job openings in this or any related field, or just has any ideas or suggestions to help her out, it'd be greatly appreciated! If you want a resume, I can get you a copy.

Thank you!

I've actually considered majoring in sports management. I knew full well that the job market was slim and pay usually not that great. However, I just considered it because it was something I was passionate about (sports) with the intent to work in coal mine until I got a good opportunity. I finally came to my senses and decided to stick with accounting/business. No sense in wasting 80k on a college education for something I may never use.

It doesn't really matter what you major in to an extent, but I have to agree, going to Kent State probably wasn't the best choice.

I'll keep an eye out though.

It's hard to find a decent job in the sports industry without a grad degree in sports mgmt/administration. Grad school programs come with a bigger network of alumni that most undergrad programs won't have and those really help in finding a job.

Here are two decent sports-based job boards. The work in sports site requires a membership fee, but it might be worth it if this is the route you want to take.

Good luck. The job market sucks. I have been looking for a job too.

If she's smart, I believe OU has a great grad program for sports management. Bachelor degrees are the new high school diploma. High school diplomas are now worthless.

OU's program is top 5 for sports administration master's. It's tough to get into, but it would be worthwhile to pursue.

OU is a joke.
