Shady, shady stuff the Iranians are doing. In order to evade sanctions on shipping, the Iranians are creating new holding and shipping companies regularly that get around companies that are under UN sanctions. The one example in the NYT article the Iran Mufateh, part of a fleet owned by the state-owned Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines, known as Irisl was then renamed the Diplomat under a new company and picked up a speedboat that was illegal for Iran to possess as it can carry torpedoes.
The Iranians can easily use this short of manipulation and probably have to continue their nuclear program as well as to continue to arm their military.
While sanctions are one tool to slow Iran, this obviously slows more is needed.

Maybe the US navy should board a few of these ships in international waters and shoot a few people (in self defense of course) and say that they were in danger from people with sticks......

Are these shell companies specifically done with the intent to obfuscate? Most companies have layers and layers of shell companies underneath, typically to shift liability or maintain focus in particular areas, not to hide anything from anyone.

The article to me made it sound that way. My first inclination is to wonder if there are any tax motivations for these shell companies for foreign tax credit purposes. Sure it's nice to avoid the U.S. Treasury sanctions, but it's even nicer to manipulate a profit from it through transfer pricing.

I would think so. The companies are included the three previous UNSC Sanctions issued over the past 6 years. The article did mention the smuggling of a speed boat in order to evade U.S. sanctions.
Also, we do know that Iran does some trading with North Korea, Malaysia and Pakistan, which includes illegal arms and possible uranium enrichment rotors and parts. They usually use Flag of Convenience vessels, but also their own.
I see it in a broad sense as one more data point in the evidence that Iran is not fully being truthful about its intentions, both conventionally and with its nuclear program.

Like every big company? It's usually done for tax/liability purposes, not as some sort of subterfuge.
